Plastic Technology, Adhesive Bonding, Encapsulating, Coating, and Molding

Expert's selection of elastomer compounds depends upon the type of mold to be made with a pourable or brush on grade rubber. He used both methods depending upon the industry, and notes that aerospace and boat manufacturers would be two of the industries using these methods, for example elastomers and polymers.
Expert knows that every industry has a need for a mold maker to speed up the manufacturing process or for new design work. Not all "hands on personnel" are adept for rigid and flexible mold making, so as a consultant, he has been brought in to demonstrate the use of the products available for the respective tasks. He would develop a "teaching program" with the help of management in selecting staff members to train. Again, the managers tell Expert what they want, the cost limits and chain of command to interface with to do the job right for their project. Expert's expertise in selecting the right materials, cost, and production time in mold making helps the company from the drawing board to production.
Expert was involved in all types of mold making from benchtop, to machine- made parts (injection molding), compression molding, and rotation molding.
Expert used testing procedures (generally in-house but also at qualified labs) to determine breakage, shrinkage, ASTM classification, complete destruction, chemical resistance, heat distortion, and concern for potential allergic reaction.
When Expert is asked to consult, he can take an idea off the paper stage and “run with it” until he has a finished product. In many cases he has to consider the question of chemical compatibility. His prime concern is for the environment, as well as taking care that no damage, destruction, nor distortion of the plastic part occurs in its intended use and expected longevity.
Expert would use his materials and processing engineering expertise to select for the model maker the proper materials to produce the molds and parts to be made. He is instrumental in helping mold makers all over the country, such as famous doll makers, candle makers, and those involved in scientific equipment construction and in restoration of churches and buildings with respect to replacing their art work.
Expert can select a polymer for an application depending upon the type of properties each polymer offers and the price, as well as the life span of the cured polymer.
Expert can assist in choosing a rigid or semi-rigid plastic resin, liquid, or powder depending on part configuration and material requirements, for the mold or the parts produced. As an example, this was done for a prototype to be evaluated in the toy industry, recreational industry, and the auto industry.
Throughout his 45 years in plastics and rubber technology, Expert has been well known in his field as a materials processing engineer involved with the selection of two-part adhesive systems. Expert successfully bonded aerospace composite materials to each other and then to a third substrate surface. He also developed processes to bond laboratory stone tops without the need of machining and inserting brass fasteners.
