DIMENSIONAL STABILIZATION OF WOOD. Expert has extensive experience in the development of water repellents and chemical treatments for stabilizing wood. He has developed treatments that are being used commercially, and continues an active research in this area. His research has included the use of polymer treatments to modify the properties of wood. He has performed the process of impregnating chemicals into wood to reduce or retard the shrinking and swelling or wood when it is exposed to water in the liquid or vapor state.
WOOD DECAY. Expert has extensive knowledge about wood decay fungi and their effects on the properties of wood, including an understanding of the chemistry and biochemistry of wood decay. He has extensive experience in determining the cause of wood failure due to decay in utility poles and other wood structures.
WOOD FIRE RETARDANTS. Expert has considerable knowledge of fire retardant treatments for wood. He has been involved in commercial treatments, as well as the development of new formulations. In addition, he has consulted with a number of firms on the effects of some fire retardants on the strength properties of wood.
WOOD PHYSICS; WOOD STRUCTURE; WOOD ELECTRICAL PROPERTY. Expert is proficient in wood-moisture relations, wood-heat relations, and the electrical properties of wood. He is also adept in the gross and microscopic anatomical and structural characteristics of wood.
BIOCIDES; MARINE BORERS; TERMITES. Expert is familiar with the chemicals that control microorganisms and insects which degrade organic matter. He is also knowledgeable of marine borers (animals that attack wood in the marine environment) and termites.
WOOD CREOSOTE; CREOSOTE ENVIRONMENT EFFECT. Over the past 15 years, Expert has been involved with the environmental aspects of wood preservatives, particularly pentachlorophenal, creosote and the arsenicals. This work has included literature reviews and participation in a USDA/EPA review of these compounds. He has been involved in bioremediation studies of both pentachlorophenol and creosote contaminated sites.
