Wood Adhesives and Wood Composite Products
ID: 722013
Georgia, USA
Expert has carried out research on phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins used in oriented strand board, softwood plywood, paper saturation and other wood types, and interacted with manufacturing plants and end users. Expert has published numerous papers on the chemical structures and polymer and curing chemistry of PF resins. He has discovered in his research that there are various ways to optimize the resin selection, manufacturing, and application processes in using PF resins, or the end products behave poorly. He has an in-depth understanding of the polymer and curing chemistry of PF resins to optimize processes for resin manufacturers and end users.
He has also carried out research on resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) and lower cost phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) resins used in wood laminating and the I-beam manufacturing industry. He has a good amount of personal interaction experience in the lumber lamination industry, both with and without the radio-frequency heating for curing. He is familiar with the resin formulations, control of formaldehyde odour, curing and testing the performance of laminated lumber products.
Expert has conducted research on the formulation and manufacturing of wood adhesive thermosetting resins: phenol-formaldehyde, phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, urea-melamine-formaldehyde, lignin and tannin-based resins, and many other additives going into these thermosetting resins. He also has extensive end-user experiences with these resins.
He has carried out extensive research on (UF) resins formulation, resin polymer structure, curing, storage behavior, and their performance as particleboard binder resins. An improved understanding of UF resins has been achieved through this research, to help optimize processes for better performance and less formaldehyde emission. Expert also has broad experience with additive materials to UF resins – such as melamine in terms of urea-melamine-formaldehyde resins – which help improve the wood bond’s durability performance.
Expert has been working as a researcher and product developer on UF resin-bonded particleboard, medium density fiberboard, PF resin-bonded oriented strand board and plywood, and PRF resin-bonded laminated lumber products. He has developed many adhesive systems for these wood products and is familiar with performance testing and actual performance. He also has research experience on steam-injection wood composite lumber products such as Parallel Lam.

Expert has developed ways to improve wood adhesive bonds by reformulating urea and melamine-urea-formaldehyde resins. He has been an expert witness regarding the durability of phenol-formaldehyde resin-bonded oriented strand boards (OSB) in residential uses. Expert successfully identified the causes of poor wood board consolidation in particleboard and medium density fiberboard (MDF).He has worked to improve the cooking method of oriented strand board binder-type phenol-formaldehyde resins. He has also improved the bonding performance of phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde wood laminating resins.
