Responsibilities: Review product/chemical formulations for Dietary Supplement program for toxicity based on dosage levels and ingredients. Products reviewed include all types of dietary supplements and functional foods (i.e. vitamins/minerals, protein shakes/bars, botanical ingredients, and other natural health products). Review dietary supplement product literature for compliance with Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) from FDA, Natural Health Product Regulations (Health Canada), Council of Responsible Nutrition (CRN), and other regulation agencies. Review dietary supplement and functional food labels for compliance with 21CFR101.36 (Nutritional labeling of Dietary Supplements) and 21CFR101.9 (Nutritional labeling of food). Evaluate toxicological data for Dietary Supplement program, including participating in research to establish safe levels for chemicals based on guidelines set forth in NSF/ANSI Standard 173 (Dietary Supplements). Provide technical support for clients and project managers in Dietary Supplement program. Inform clients of necessary registrations for products when required, such as New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) requests. Review scientific studies pertaining to claims made for Dietary Supplement products. Health claims and structure/function claims as defined by FDA require review prior to granting NSF Certification for dietary supplement products. Review product formulations and test results to ensure products are free of banned substances set forth in The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List as well as prohibited substance lists for Major League Baseball (MLB), National Football League (NFL), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
