The characterization techniques Expert uses in his work with thin film materials includes all of the surface and thin film sensitive spectroscopies (Auger electron, X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron). This has been augmented by the surface electron diffraction techniques of low-energy electron diffraction and reflection high energy electron diffraction. These techniques (in conjunction with SEM and scanning tunneling microscopy) have been used to investigate the interaction of atoms and molecules with the surface of materials, focusing on the interaction of surface chemistry.
Since the growth and characterization of thin film materials is a major portion of his career, Expert has come to understand the application and use of ultra-high vacuum and vacuum technology. This includes vacuum-compatible materials, vacuum measurement, vacuum leak detection, and vacuum pumping. The most recent application of this knowledge has come through the definition, implementation, and deployment of a major experiment in the measurement and use of the vacuum of space. The experiment to measure the vacuum of space and grow thin films has flown on two Shuttle missions and will fly a third Shuttle mission in late 1996.
Expert's R&D efforts in recent years have focused on the development of thin film high temperature superconductors with specific focus on Yba2Cu3O7-x superconductors. Both materials development and device applications have been addressed with special interest and accomplishments in superconducting transistors, thick film superconducting wires and thick film deposition techniques including MOCVD.
Expert's work in high temperature superconducting thin films has led to extensive work in thin film advanced oxides. These include dielectric, ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and piezoelectric oxide materials fabricated in crystalline thin film form by pulsed laser deposition and MOCVD, and applied to such devices as uncooled IR detectors, high dielectric materials for DRAMs, ceramic optical detectors, and ferroelectric RAMs.
In the past four years, Expert has moved into the development of thin film growth for flight in space. This has required not only a strong background in thin film science but an intense knowledge of the structure and operation of NASA and its Shuttle Program. He has been instrumental in designing, developing, fabricating, and deploying major flight hardware for use on the Shuttle. This includes all of the interactions required to interface with NASA and the NASA Mission Operations Directorate and encompasses safety reviews, preliminary and critical design reviews, and cargo integration reviews.
Expert has worked with several materials with specific properties over the last 20 years. Past work in the area of materials stability in severe oxidation environments has centered on materials stable in oxygen at high temperatures and under high solar (or photo) fluxes. Other unique materials studied include high-temperature superconducting ceramics, dielectric thin films, and band-gap engineered semiconductor materials.
