Sustainable and Energy Efficient Buildings and Building Technologies
ID: 729323
United Kingdom
Expert is an expert in the design of low energy, low carbon buildings. He has extensive experience in integrating both passive and active solutions for internal climate control, delivering buildings that set the benchmarks for energy efficient design. These include the Genzyme Centre, Boston MA, which is the largest LEED Platinum building in the world and the Innovate Green Office, Leeds UK, which holds the record for the highest BREEAM rating ever. The Institution of Civil Engineers has awarded Expert the Edmund Hambley Medal for creative design in the field of sustainability.
Expert is an expert in all forms of energy supply for buildings, including conventional and renewable energy systems. He is however a vocal and widely published critic of “eco-bling”; the use of inappropriate renewable systems to dress up conventional energy hungry building designs. He always approaches designs from the principle of avoiding energy consumption first, designing efficient systems and only then incorporating renewable energy. Expert has been awarded the James Watt Medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers for the best published work in the field of energy.
Expert is an expert in the design of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical systems for buildings. He has particular expertise in the design of low energy building services for challenging buildings such a historic refurbishments or those with specific environmental control requirements. Expert has been a consultant to the Royal Albert Hall since 2005 developing strategies for energy efficiency and refurbishment. He was also advisor to the British Library for the development of the environmental requirements for their centre for conservation, the first building in the world designed bespoke for book conservation. Expert is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers in the United Kingdom and a recognised leader in the education and development of building services engineers.
Expert was engaged by a technology start up to help them position their product in the market. Expert helped the company generate, interpret and present evidence of the product's benefits and guided them through the process of attaining certification for inclusion in the UK's Green Deal building refurbishment programme. Expert was engaged by The Royal Academy of Engineering to research and author their report "Engineering a Low Carbon Built Environment". Expert has since been engaged to develop and manage a major survey and research to establish new directions for national policy and education to address the low carbon skills shortage. Expert was engaged by London Transport to scope and author a set of standard specifications to be used in the procurement of new building services installations for their extensive office portfolio. The standards were tailored to focus on energy and resource efficiency and to encourage suppliers and contractors to adopt environmental best practice. Expert developed a series of long term strategies for improving the building environments and infrastructure as part of a new masterplan for the British Museum in London. The focus was on working with the existing environments within the historic buildings and developing solutions that complemented these rather than compromising them. Expert is provided strategic support and design advice for a major refurbishment programme at The Royal Albert Hall in London over a period of 6 years. The initial appointment was to undertake a review and appraisal of the existing building services infrastructure. The study identified shortcomings in the existing systems, impacts of future climate and energy market changes and proposed a range of solutions to reduce the Hall’s operational costs with ongoing improvements in performance and function. Expert was subsequently retained to advise on a wide range of issues and his firm was appointed to carry out the design for a major renewal of the building services infrastructure.
