United Kingdom
She is a member of the British Institute of Radiology, British Society of Paediatric Radiology and European Society of Pediatric Radiology (being a co - founder of the junior arm of the latter).
Within paediatric radiology, Expert subspecialises in the musculoskeletal system, with a particular interest in skeletal dysplasias and child abuse.
Within the UK pediatric radiology circle, Expert is recognized as the chief expert in the diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias. She has both clinical and research interests in this field. She receives on average 5 referrals per week from across the UK from radiologists, geneticists and pathologists seeking her expert opinion when a skeletal dysplasia is suspected.
Her research relates to optimising current imaging techniques with emphasis on reducing radiation dose, developing new applications of existing technology as it relates to the diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias and differentiating child abuse from skeletal dysplasias (in particular from osteogenesis imperfecta).
She is a committee member of the Skeletal Dysplasia Group for Teaching and Research (SDG) and of the International Consortium for Vertebral Anomalies and Scoliosis (ICVAS). She is a panel member of the European Skeletal Dysplasia Network and a member of the British Society of Skeletal Radiology, International Skeletal Dysplasia Society and International Skeletal Society.
She has written book chapters and published teaching aids and articles for the diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias and has given over 15 national and international invited lectures on the radiology of general or specific skeletal dysplasias. She is an instructor on the biannual Skeletal Dysplasia Group for Teaching and Research Instructional Course, and recently co organised and taught on a 4 day course on the diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias in Bangalore, India.
Expert has provided expert reports for legal teams wishing to differentiate genetic causes of skeletal malformation in fetuses / infants / children from adverse effects of therapeutic agents taken by their mothers during pregnancy.
Expert is one of only a handful of pediatric radiologists in the UK providing expert opinion to the courts in cases of suspected child physical abuse. She has both provided expert reports and appeared in Court as an expert witness in these matters.
Her PhD (University of London) was on the optimisation of the radiological imaging of suspected child abuse.
She has published many papers, given local, national and international talks and co authored a book - Radiological Atlas of Child Abuse.
She is a member of the British Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (BASPCAN) and of the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN).
