CORRUGATED BOXBOARD; CONTAINER BOARD; KRAFT PAPER; LINERBOARD. As Manager of Operations at Smurfit R&D, Expert was responsible for both papermaking and converting aspects of technical development. He has worked extensively on materials and additives, conversion, fitness for use, and performance studies. Because of his in-depth knowledge of these areas, he has gained a reputation for innovation and creativity.
PAPER-WEB-FORMING MACHINERY; DRY-END PAPER OPERATION. Expert's background in a paper mill combined with his mill research experience provides him with a deep understanding of the papermaking process. He has studied and applied the required principles from stock prep to reel and beyond. He is familiar with web-forming machinery, steam and condensate systems, headbox operations, refiners, pressing, calendering, winding, and dry-end operations.
PULP-AND-PAPER TECHNOLOGY; CHEMICAL PULPING. His experience with the kraft process has provided Expert with a working knowledge of woodyard operations, pulping, washing, evaporation, recovery, causticizing, and byproducts recovery. Expert has used his 13 years of R&D experience to troubleshoot operations, run recovery and evaporator operations (during strike duty), review and contribute to new pulp mill design, and test multiple wood species and cooking conditions for property enhancements and suitability.
BOXBOARD; PAPER CURL; LINTING. As head of research for Jefferson Smurfit Corporation, Expert worked with boxboard mills to evaluate, troubleshoot, and improve operations. The areas he has covered include waste paper; cleaning; screening; refining; cylinder, ultraformer and FC former; stock blending; additives; pressing; drying; finishing; and clay coating. His work with carton plants gave him knowledge of converting issues and the papermaking variables that affect them.
PAPER RECYCLING. Expert is knowledgeable of paper recycling processes, including defiberizing, cleaning and use of various fibers, fractionation, de-inking, water management, and fines control.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT. Through is work with Management One, Expert has consulted on the sophisticated use of trending formulas to predict inventory needs. Developed over the past eight years, he uses the trending methodology to anticipate raw material needs, cash requirements, and machine scheduling.
WORK TEAM; INTEGRATED PRODUCT TEAM; CROSS-FUNCTIONAL TEAM. Since 1990 Expert has been Managing Director of Management One, a company that specializes in implementing team-based organizations in companies. He developed a process that teaches teamwork, problem-solving, and empowerment in a format that is sustainable. Expert has an MBA in management and 25 years of practical management experience in the paper industry. He has had the management responsibility for 400 union production workers.
