Printing, Printing Inks, Printing for Packaging, Publication, Commercial and Digital Printing
ID: 726020
Michigan, USA
He worked for a company that produced crude phthalocyanine and processed crude phthalocyanince into pigment. He ran a R&D team looking to improve the coloristics of these pigments, improve its ease of dispersion, improve its rheological properties once dispersed and his team also looked at ways of lowering manufacturing costs. Expert also looked at new phthalocyanince pigments as dispersing aids and as aids to modifying crystal growth. Digital printing refers to inkjet and electrophotographic toner. Expert has developed inkjet inks for DOD and CIJ. He understands the critial importance of finding the correct balance in material properties and how they can influence ink stability, jetting, nozzle outs and finished print properties. He has also looked at electrophotographic toner and understands (to a less extent than inkjet) the role of materials and their influence on toner properties.
He has worked since 1986 on flexographic inks. He and his team developed many new types of inks that are used within the industry today - NC/polymade process colors, PVB inks, high strength waterbased inks, new lamination inks and new methods of manufacturing pigment dispersions for flexographic inks. Expert has also worked on conductive inks for printed electronics that can be prinetd flexo.
Expert has worked in Graphic Arts since 1983. He is familiar with all aspects of the supply chain but with an emphasis on printing and printing inks. He has advised many companies on the challenges and opportunities facing this industry and continues to work with the North American Priting Ink Association and the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts. He has a unique combination of skills being well grounded technical and commercially. Publication gravure and packaging gravure are one of the key printing processes used in Graphic Arts. The process is under threat from offset and flexo and he has talked extensively about how gravure can compete more effectively. He has given training courses on behalf of the Gravure Association of America on gravure printing inks. He has developed conductive inks that can be printed gravure for use in printed electronic applications.
Expert has managed teams developing many different types of organic pigments - for example arylides, di-arylides, azo, lake pigments and phthalocyanine pigments. His teams specialized in new types of surface tretaments to improve coloristic properties, improve dispersibility and reduce costs. He also worked exetensively at new methods of manufacturing pigments and pigment dispersions as well as ways of linking pigment synthesis with pigment dispersing processes.
Printing ink is a $13 billion industry, but is certainly having a very disruptive time from alternative media, such as the internet, and from alternative forms of printing such as digital printing. Expert has worked with all types of inks and ink raw materials. He has managed long term R&D groups as well as technical service groups. He has a good understanding of the challenges facing the industry and where there are still opportunities to make good business investments.
Radiation Curing is one of the fastest growing areas within the printing ink industry. The advantages of no VOC combined with instant cure make this technology very attractive. Expert has developed UV and EB cured inks for offset, flexo, screen and digital printing. He has strong relationships with all of the major suppliers to the industry for both raw materials and curing equipment. Offset printing is the most popular of all of the printing processes. Expert has developed inks for heatset. coldset and sheet fed offset printing. He has also worked with anciallry suppliers to this industry including manufacturers of litho plates, blankets, rollers, founts and printing proesses. TAs well as the more common oil based offset inks he has also developed UV and EB cured offset inks, UV news inks, UV hybrid inks, conductive inks, vegetable oil based inks, expaned color gamut inks, low VOC heatset inks, security inks and offset inks with good adhesion to impervious substrates.
Packaging is one of the areas of growth within a depressed Graphic Arts market. There are many significant changes within packaging that he continues to work on and these include sustainability, novel visual effects, brand protection, concerns over migratable and extractable materials, improved barrier properties and ways of reducing cost. Expert has consulted many times on these subjects and he is regarded as one of the industries experts in this area.
He has consulted with a major chemical company who was looking to enter the Graphic Arts market. He helped them develop their initial justification and then worked with them in preparing a presentation for their executive committee. He has worked with a supplier to the Graphic Arts market in developing improved technical and market literature to improve their efforts in developing sales into the Graphic Arts market. He also ran in-house training programs for this company to improve their awreness of the Graphic ArtsHe was worked with an electronics manufacturing company in developing and introducing printing processes within their manufacturing operation that increases efficiency and reduces cost.He helped a major supplier to the Graphic Arts market look at alternative markets for their products, and helped them in understanding where they have opportunities to use their skills and capabilities to develop new products. He has worked with one of the major companies in the Graphic Arts Industry in looking at new business development options. These options included digital printing, flat panel displays, printed electronics as well as looking at adjacent areas, within their supply chain, that may help them expand their product portfolio or reduce costs.
