Expert Details
Powder Processing/Fabrication
ID: 718354
Massachusetts, USA
Expert has extensive experience with dispersion, particle synthesis, particle separation, properties measurement, and powder processing and characterization of ceramic systems. He has worked with a wide range of materials such as ferrites, titanates, oxides, carbides, and nitrides applied to electronic, structural, and other applications, as well as ceramic, metal, and ceramic dental materials.
Expert has devised new processing techniques and schemes such as the semicontinuous classification of submicron size powders, and the continuous chemical synthesis of monosized ceramic powders. His work has included dispersion and slip/slurry preparation, and forming/shaping techniques. He has developed procedures for semicontinuous production of narrow size distribution powders, and application of instrumentation, sensors, and controls for liquid based processing of powders.
Expert has used centrifuges to classify (separate) sub-micron particles in a semicontinuous separation system and to centrifugally cast net-shape parts from high solids content suspensions (slurries).
Expert is experienced with plasma spraying to prepare and apply composite materials for a variety of applications including electrical resistance heating and chemical corrosion resistance. He has used plasma spraying for the direct fabrication of a variety of components and shapes from metal, ceramic, and composite materials. He has also worked on the development of multi-layered graded and coated parts fabrication as well as single composition, pipes, crucibles, and other items. Expert was involved with preparing powders for use in plasma spray equipment and using powders for forming devices (components) as well as coatings. He has developed powders for controlled (engineered) microstructures and techniques to fabricate net-shape, controlled, macrostructure components. He has also used plasma spraying to fabricate magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) electrode modules.
Expert's work in this area is mainly with ceramic materials, but also includes metals, polymers, and mixed material composites. He is familiar with metal matrix (MMC) and ceramic matrix (CMC) composites, as well as using and developing interconnected, interpenetrating phase composites. These materials were developed for various specific applications, such as electrical resistance heating, and for dental prostheses. Expert has worked with materials for electrical and mechanical (structural) applications. Forming (fabrication) techniques for these materials (metals, ceramics, cermets) include arc plasma spraying, colloid (filter) pressing, slip casting, dry pressing, and centrifugal casting. Primarily, his efforts have been directed to net shape fabrication.
