Coating system design is an area that Expert is also adept in. In designing his own powder coating system and facility in two locations as well as a consultant for other companies, the level of understanding coating system designs is vast. System designs are specific to each client and require in-depth client consultations to determine the correct system for the planned usage. Flexibility of system designs are critical to being able to anticipate market changes that will affect the potential viability of any system. Expert has a unique way of understanding the client requirements and then conveying those thoughts to a proper coating system design.
Expertise in the Oven area has been developed through continual use of these items in our own coating operations. As well the design and installation of convection ovens infrared and UV curable ovens are also an area of expertise. Experts' knowledge of metal finishing has been garnered through work in the contract door and hardware business in his formative professional years. Currently working in the powder coating field has Expert interacting with plating facilities and many other types of metal finishing. From flame spray to Teflon coatings and an understanding of the client needs of metal parts aids Expert in determining the correct finishing process for them. These are areas where Expert can guide a potential client with invaluable hands on experience. All coatings require good intercoat adhesion for successful multiple stage coatings. The understanding of the chemical as well as the mechanical bonds of various coatings is key to complete system control. Continual research and dialogue with the manufacturers and their engineering staff is an area understood by Expert.
All powder coatings and paints for that matter are considered organic coating containing a carbon molecule in the matrix. These coatings have frailties that are differing with changing resin systems. Understanding the different systems allows the expert to determine the correct organic coating system for the application. Some experience has also been gained in the basic understanding of inorganic coatings such as Siloxane and Silane coatings.
Powder Coating having started in the mid 1940s in Germany has now become the largest form of metal finishing for colored metal surfaces. Many differing powder coating processes are used today to treat different metals as well as some non-metal parts. Electrostatic corona style powder coating is the most common application method. However, there are application techniques that use fluidized bed and even extrusion process to apply them. Heating of these powders can be done with gas fired convection, electric convection, infrared, or UV curing processes. In some production environments the use of infrared and convection can be used to increase production and gain aesthetic looks. Expert has a real world understanding of the processes and how to advise a client correctly.
Surface preparation is the fundamental key to having good adhesion of any coating system to any substrate. By attending many seminars schools and through actual field examination Expert has a complete understanding of proper surface preparation as it relates to most any surface coating. By following known industry standards such as the SSPC and NACE then training personnel to follow these tried and true guidelines, proper coatings adhesion can be obtained. Thorough surface preparation must be accomplished to meet the specification required for each individual coating. Differing coating systems can have surface preparations that vary and an industry expert must be able to recognize them and adjust the preparation to meet the coatings requirements.
