Years: 1970 to 1999 | Employer: ICI Paints | Title: Various | Department: |
Responsibilities:Expert served this $1.5 billion coatings company in a number of roles. Most recently, he was Principal Scientist in the Materials Science and Analytical Services division from 1983-1999 (just over 15 years). Before this time, he was Senior Scientist in Polymer and Coatings Research from 1978-1983. Previously, from 1971-1978, He was Technical Manager of Fundamental and Computer Sciences. He began his tenure with ICI as Section Head of Fundamental and Analytical Sciences from 1970-1971.During his time with the company, Expert was responsible for polymer physics, analytical services, scientific computing, technical information services and interactions with the academic community. Responsibilities included a staff of 30, a $3.2 million operating budget and a capital budget of $250,000 for instrumentation. Responsibilities have also included managing polymer chemistry and coatings research departments. He reported to V.P of R&D for ICI Paints. During this time, Expert: • Directed the growth of an external (to ICI Paints) polymer characterization support services business to over $700,000 after two years. • Reduced latex and packaging coating resin cycle time and optimized product/process through participation in an ICI multi business team to develop new online sensor technology (near IR, viscometry, dielectric, particle size) for monitoring polymerization reactors which involved networking across ICI and the North American academic community. • Avoided product liability (over $2 million/year) in packaging and decorative coatings businesses and supported new product development and product problem-solving through development of an effective polymer characterization and analysis capability. • Commercialized and licensed patented particle size instrumentation resulting in $400,000 profit on technology developed for internal use. Received two Glidden awards for Technical Excellence. • Developed continuous GPC viscometer, subsequently commercialized by Waters Associates, which provides absolute MWD and branching data. • Facilitated faster powder coatings product introduction into the market place and growth of Glidden as the second largest powder coating manufacturer in North America through the development and effective application of unique characterization methodology. • Facilitated improved product consistency/quality and faster product introduction to the market place for latex polymer and water borne coatings through the development and application of focused characterization and QC methodology. • Facilitated market place introduction of high solids coatings through the analysis of oligomers to understand and optimize the structure/morphology/property/end use relationships of coatings products. • Managed ICI North American networking with the academic community with a research portfolio of over $1 million per annum. • Developed coatings industry state of the art technical skill base in GPC, particle size analysis, cure chemistry and physics, thermal analysis, rheology and microscopy. • Significantly improved the skill base in the Analytical Services Department in IR, GC, IH, LC, and organic/inorganic analyses. • Restructured Polymer Physics and Analytical Services Departments to function as an integrated unit and provide customer satisfaction. • Managed the establishment of research center local area network and scientific computing capability. • Directed the development of a cost effective custom tailored LIMS system to effectively manage the polymer and coatings characterization capability. |
