Years: 1989 to 2020 | Employer: ITW Signode | Title: Director of Engineering, V.P. Film Operations, etc. | Department: Stretch Film |
Responsibilities:Handled polyethylene (PE) raw material procurement, saving millions of dollars each year.Grew stretch film (SF) business from 3M ppy (million pounds per year) off one line in Glenview, IL to 100M ppy out of two US plants, PLUS three plants in Europe (one greenfield, two by acquisition). Invented pre-stretched/oriented stretch wrap - primarily for hand wrapping, leading the industry to reduce its use of plastic resins by hundreds of millions of pounds per year. Put Lachenmeier in the stretch hood film (SH) business in North America through outsourcing and product development, including… With others, invented Xeros(R) anti-condensation stretch hood film used primarily for products like knocked-down corrugated boxes stored outside. Led efforts in primary metals packaging that ultimately resulted in a dominant U.S. Market share through our FleetwoodSignode division. With others, invented reinforced poly wraps with mating cling stripes for the packaging of steel coils including volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI ≈ rust inhibitor). Managed global innovation and intellectual property decisions for ITW’s stretch film businesses. Managed stretch film pricing for much of this period. Handled private label and intercompany sales directly. Performed customer troubleshooting and technical service for both rotary stretch film and stretch hood film products. Familiar with Highlight, ESTL, and full range of ASTM laboratory test methods. Served on ASTM SF subcommittees multiple times. Purchased film extrusion equipment, both complete lines ($3M+) as well as components. Handled competitive surveillance and product analysis Supported Signode PET recycling, PET and PP strapping, and GinFast™ cotton bale wrap projects. Handled packaging of stretch film products including leading the industry away from EPS foam cradles to vertical packaging of SF machine rolls as well as the first bulk packaging of handwrap rolls. Very knowledgeable in the current environmental dilemma facing all single use plastic products including carbon footprint/life-cycle analysis, all the different types of degradability, sustainably sourced materials, and of course the challenges related to recycling. Developed clear UVI as well as white UVI silage wrap for the North American market. |
