Excipients are broadly defined as any pharmacologically inert components other than the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) that are added intentionally to the pharmaceutical formulations. Unintentional variability in the properties of the excipients may have a range of influences on their functionality and performance in the dosage form. A better understanding of these influences on the critical quality attributes of the final product is of prime importance to ensure the quality and performance of a pharmaceutical formulation. Moreover in recent years, clearly defining the function of an excipient in a formulation, along with the knowledge of factors that may influence its functionality has become increasingly important from a regulatory perspective.

Expert has completed several research projects related to excipient characterization and excipient functionality. Most of these projects were funded by external sponsors and the results have been published in high impact peer-reviewed journals.

Over the years, several approaches have been explored to enhance the aqueous solubility and/or bioavailability of drugs. A relatively newer approach studied for improving the solubility/bioavailability of bioactive molecules includes complexation of drug molecules with large, amphiphilic molecules such as phospholipids.

Non-destructive analysis of tablet properties:Several non-invasive techniques have been explored to monitor the physical-mechanical properties of tablets and/or tableting processes. These techniques include, near infrared spectroscopy (NIR), Raman spectroscopy, x-ray microtomography, Terahertz Pulsed Imaging, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), acoustic emission (AE), and acoustic resonance spectroscopy.
