Expert has 15 years of experience in marketing research. He worked for eight years in marketing research at Amoco, four years as Director of Marketing Research. His major contributions at Amoco include: guiding Amoco’s marketing research to enhance and defend Amoco’s brand image and market share from competitive assaults and changing motivations of fuel brand selection; working with Amoco’s advertising agency to develop and evaluate advertising; improving station image using design firm and in-house engineering staff; advising marketing management on motorist’s view of all aspects of petroleum marketing. He made extensive statistical analysis of primary and secondary data bases, including demographics; taking the initiative in forming working teams between marketing and R&D for new product and advertising development; and, establishing international marketing research capabilities in China, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, and Eastern Europe. Recent studies include: a membership enhancement marketing study for a symphony orchestra in the Chicago area; evaluation of the up-scale toilet market in China for a valve manufacturer; market assessment of motorist attitudes toward fuel and convenience store brands in Winston-Salem, NC; and, evaluation of the marine head market in US pleasure boats. Expert has a worldwide network of marketing research contacts, including contacts in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Brazil, and Russia. He has authored several papers that appeared in Quirk’s Marketing Research Review on doing marketing research in China and the growing Chinese automobile market.
Expert has 13 years of experience with Amoco Oil R&D in reduced crude processing, synthetic fuels development, and the conversion of remote natural gas to transportation fuels. This experience is in both economic evaluations and process development. His major contributions include: development of a resid catalytic cracking process to control the effect of contaminate metals on the catalyst; development of a short residence time coal liquefaction process via flash pyrolysis to maximize liquid yield; being a technical advisor to the H-Coal pilot plant in Catlettsburg, Kentucky; being a technical advisor to the SRC coal liquefaction plant in Wilsonville, Alabama; project leader to utilize the by-products from the Great Plains lignite gasification project; development of a short residence time shale retorting process to maximize liquid yields; commercial evaluation of the Sunnyside (Utah) tar sand deposit; process evaluation of mixed alcohols from synthesis gas; evaluation of the incentives to monetize remote natural gas reserves to produce transportation fuels; gasoline via Mobil ZSM-5; diesel fuel via Fisher-Tropsch; and, methanol and other alcohols. During the course of these studies, Expert worked with: The Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and the Electric Power Research Institute; and, a number companies including Bechtel, Hydrocarbon Research, Inc., Mobil Oil, Gulf Oil, and Dow Chemical. Expert holds eight patents in the reduced crude, synfuels, and remote gas utilization areas. He has also authored 12 articles in refereed technical journals documenting his work in these areas.
