PARENTERAL & ENTERAL NUTRITION. Expert has a solid background in nutrient utilization and metabolic adaptation during nutritional support by total parenteral or enteral nutrition. Applications of these nutritional support techniques include studies of tumor growth and metastasis in mice; immune function in mice; liver regeneration in rats; gastrointestinal and pancreatic function in rats and mice; intraperitoneal nutrient dialysis in rats; and assessment of nutrient needs in rats and mice. Expert developed the first and currently the only technique for total nutritional support by intravenous feeding in mice. Additionally, he has interpreted relevance of data from animal studies on parenteral and enteral nutrition to human applications.
NUTRITION; PROTEIN METABOLISM. Expert teaches an undergraduate course on the fundamentals of human nutrition and a graduate-level course on proteins and amino acids in nutrition. His research interests include the role of nutrition in affecting metabolic response; protein and amino acid metabolism; nutrition and immune function; and the adaptation of the gastrointestinal tract, morphology, and enzyme and hormonal function in various enteral and parenteral feeding regimens.
