Package Development and Testing
ID: 716878
New Jersey, USA
Expert has evaluated and implemented major cost reductions through the uses of alternate and reduced weight materials for cartons, films, and plastic containers. She instituted a major program of packaging overusage tracking and reduction which helped reduce piece costs in a major bakery. She has published an article on the analysis of overusage and spoken at several meetings and seminars on the topic.
The evaluation of packaging components and systems in the lab, through distribution channels, at the vendor, and in the manufacturing plant have been a major part of Expert's career with five major companies. She installed a packaging lab in one company and managed and expanded the lab in two others. She is familiar with various types of equipment, from gauges and comparitors up to full pallet compression and vibration testers.
As a packaging development engineer, manager, and member of several project teams, Expert has been involved in all facets of bringing a package to market. She has proposed, evaluated, and modified designs, recommended equipment, selected manufacturing processes and materials, and specified and approved the final package. She has handled both primary and secondary packaging in all stages of a project.
In addition to setting up testing protocols, Expert has evaluated and modified potential package designs in the upfront design stages. In plastic parts, she has evaluated and recommended changes to designer's conceptions for moldability, online machinability, stress points, and functionality. For cartons and labels, she reviews designs for not only functionality and machinability but for technical aspects of the graphics.
Expert has handled the concept, design, development, modeling, sampling, mold production, testing, labeling, line trials, and implementation of plastic bottles for the consumer products industry. Materials she has worked with include HDPE, LDPE, PVC, and PET. She is familiar with both injection and extrusion blow molding and variations on each. In addition to new proprietary molds, she has been successful in troubleshooting and fixing problems with existing molds and in identifying and using stock bottles in order to save time and avoid mold costs. In 1999, Expert was the expert in a Teltech Live Event on Plastic Bottles: Problems and Opportunities
Having worked with a variety of plastic container types, Expert has been involved in the selection of the best form of plastic container in the concept stage. Types of containers that she has developed or modified include tubs, plastic bottles, trays, bowls and several specialized unique designs. She is familiar with the manufacturing methods of injection molding, injection blow molding, extrusion blow molding, and thermoforming. She has also implemented secondary operations such as RF sealing, where required. Various types of closures, from plastic to coated paper, have been an integral part of these projects.
Expert instituted a computerized specification system for L&F products including consistent formats for various packaging materials and components. She has been responsible for implementing and maintaining packaging specification and bill of materials systems and has prepared numerous specification formats and individual package specifications.
A secondary emphasis in Expert's career involves evaluating and implementing the use of recycled paperboard and plastics for packaging components. She has evaluated packages for environmental impact.
Expert has evaluated and implemented barrier films for oxygen, water vapor, flavor, and odor transmission. She has implemented film usage for high speed individually-wrapped packages and unitizing overwraps such as shrink and stretch wraps. She co-authored a Teltech Dossier on Barrier Material Technology.
Also in an area of secondary emphasis, Expert has evaluated the integrity of medical device packaging for radiation, ethylene oxide, and for hospital autoclaving applications. She has designed and developed packaging involving both sterile bags and trays and re-usable autoclaveable "tool kits" and single item packages.
The design, development, evaluation, and sourcing for bottle, tube, carton, and other package closures has been a secondary emphasis in Expert's career. This work includes leakage evaluation and troubleshooting for various liquid products.
Expert keeps abreast of the latest developments through technical society meetings and publications. She has presented at seminars, written technical articles, and given guest lectures at NYU graduate school. She has been quoted in a number of both printed and online publications as an expert resource on current packaging trends.
