ELECTRO-OPTICAL INSTRUMENT DESIGN. Expert is experienced in the design of spectroradiometric and imaging instruments for commercial, space, industrial, and medical monitoring and diagnosis applications. This includes image plane sensor design. Light source design and development for these applications is also available.
REMOTE SENSING. Expert has experience in instrumentation development for remote sensing of atmospheric and surface species in pollution monitoring and earth resources studies.
OPTICAL INSTRUMENT DESIGN; OPTICAL ENGINEERING. Over 30 years of Expert's work has involved engineering optical instruments from concept to finished product. He has worked with unique spectroradiometers, polarimeters, photometers, and interferometers for space exploration, industrial, or medical applications. For some customers, he scaled up to the production of multiple units. He has participated in the design and development of sensing and monitoring instruments that operate at wavelengths between the UV and Far-IR regions. His specific roles are conceptual design, component specification, assembly and test procedures, and performance evaluation.
OPTICAL THIN-FILM DESIGN. Some of Expert's customers require novel designs for special applications ranging from aerospace to ophthalmic to atmospheric monitoring applications. His knowledge of the operating characteristics of thin film coatings such as filters, mirrors, and anti-reflection coatings is used to analyze and predict a customer's performance in the operating environment of the optical instrument. At times, he recommends specific coating materials and/or modifications to the design to ensure proper performance. Examples of his work are narrow bandpass filters that must operate in a large angle of incidence condition, and spectrally selective filters for thermal emission control.
THIN-FILM DEPOSITION PROCESS DEVELOPMENT. Particular optical coating designs or coating materials might require specialized processes for their deposition onto unusual components. Expert has applied his experience in deposition technology to design equipment and processes, such as coatings on polymer eyeglasses.
OPTICAL COATING FAILURE DIAGNOSIS AND CURE. Expert has a large base of experience in troubleshooting coating failures related to materials, application, and deposition processes. He is knowledgeable of coatings on exotic or delicate substrate materials, coatings subjected to severe environmental stress, and production coatings that fail for no apparent reason. His experience also encompasses semiconductors, polymer lenses, infrared materials, high and low temperature, and abrasive environmental exposure.
COATING MATERIALS. Expert is familiar with typical and non-typical coating materials used in deposition of UV through IR coatings, and he has developed materials with improved properties.
PATENT PREPARATION. Expert has published over 30 technical papers and has 10 patents. Additionally, he has participated in the preparation of many technical proposals, several of which won contracts.
