He has a strong background in near-UV and visible fluorescence spectroscopy and photophysics of molecular systems in both condensed and gas phases. He is familiar with vibrational structure, fluorescence lifetime, the polarization effects of viscous solutions, single photon counting methods, deconvolving interference between overlapping spectra, environmental effects of quantum yields, and non-radiative energy transfer phenomena.
He has conducted numerous spectral and time resolved experiments on biological systems, isolated gas-phase molecules, and on molecular clusters.
He has experience with a wide variety of laser systems dating back 25 years. He has first-hand experience with ion, dye, excimer, copper vapour, CO2, semiconductor, and solid state lasers; as well as optical paramateric oscillators and amplifiers. He has designed and built solid state and dye lasers, laser amplifiers, fiber amplifiers, mode lockers, cavity dumpers, and Q-switched systems.
He has applied these varied laser systems to time and frequency resolved spectroscopy (often simultaneously), holography, metrology, and telecommunications.
He has a firm background in molecular spectroscopy and extensive application in the fields of biological and large molecule absorption and fluorescence. He has experience in handling situations with interfering spectra and has devised means of deconvolving overlapping contributions from similar species.
He also experience in elucidating and compensating for complicating factors such as photochemical reactivity, non radiative energy transfer, and sample turbidity.
Expert has designed and built spectroscopic instrumentation for time and frequency resolved gas phase emission measurements, one and two-laser photoionization spectroscopy, as well as condensed phase absorption and emission measurements.
Applications of these systems include laser excited biological fluorescence, large and medium molecule laser excited emission, time (and mass) resolved photoionization, as well as biomedical absorption and emission diagnostic instruments.
In many cases special sample handling arrangements were necessary, from liquid flow cells to gas-mixing systems.
An optical alignment system was required by a manufacturer of laser rangefinding equipment. He developed and built a simple to operate system capable of handling all three on the manufacturer's product lines. After on site training and support their assembly and service times have been cut by more than a factor of 10.An automotive development lab required expertise in installation and configuration of a holographic system for vibrational analysis of prototype diesel engines. He provided installation and training support to successfully implement their desired system.A manufacturer of intracavity frequency doubled high power lasers was having problems with long-term stability. He was able to troubleshoot their design and propose a successful solution.An OEM manufacturer required assistance in designing optics for a laser-based projection system. He designed the beam shaping optics and set up an alignment system for use during assembly.
