In particular, semiclassical and quantum theory of the linear and nonlinear interaction between quantum dot (QD) structures and electromagnetic excitation, taking into the consideration the depolarization induced local-field effect has been developed. An effective Hamiltonian has been derived and expressed in terms of the incident electric field, with a separate term describing the QD elecrtronic properties. The equations of motion have been formulated and numerically solved with the Hamiltonian for various types of the QD excitation, such as classical fields (CW field, light pulses) and quantum states of light (Fock qubits, coherent fields, electromagnetic vacuum state, the incident field with arbitrary photonic state distribution). In particular, for a QD exposed to coherent light, the appearance of two oscillatory regimes in the Rabi effect separated by the bifurcation has been predicted. In the first regime, the standard collapse-revivals phenomenon do not reveal itself and the QD population inversion is found to be negative, while in the second one, the collapse--revivals picture is found to be strongly distorted as compared with that predicted by the standard Jaynes-Cummings model. The Rabi oscillation period and amplitude exhibit strongly nonlinear dependence on the incident field strength. The latter result is in agreement with recent experimental observation by Mitsumoti et. al. in Ref. [Y. Mitsumori et. al. Phys. Rev. B 71, 233305] where local field effect on Rabi oscillations in isolated quantum dots confined in a single quantum well has been investigated. For the case of the QD interaction with incident optical pulse, we demonstrate that step-like transitions occur in Rabi oscillations and their signatures under certain conditions may suppressed in pump-probe experiments. The predicted effect allows to utilize the QD for the logical operations in quantum computing. For the case of QD interaction with arbitrary quantum light state in the linear regime, it has been shown that the local field induce a fine structure of the absorption spectrum: instead of a single line with frequency corresponding to which the exciton transition frequency, a duplet is appeared with one component shifted by the amount of the local field coupling parameter which is proportional to the excitonic transition dipole moment. Thus, observation of this splitting may provide a method for the investigation of such important QD electronic properties as oscillator strength, exciton radiation lifetime, etc. It has been demonstrated the strong light-mater coupling regime arises in the weak-field limit. The latter result is also in agreement with the experiment from Ref. [Y. Mitsumori et. al. Phys. Rev. B 71, 233305].
