Microbiology Biotechnology, In Vitro Diagnostics, Public Health, Tuberculosis, Mycology, Archaea
ID: 727207
New Mexico, USA
He is thoroughly familiar with both technical and regulatory aspects (especially CLIA regulation) of clinical microbiology. While at the public health lab, he developed several new tests for tuberculosis and mycology diagnosis.
Expert is a prolific publisher of research and academic literature, and has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, and NASA.
He has sat on federal advisory committees at the NSF and NASA, was the president of a regional branch of the American Society for Microbiology, and serves on the editorial board of the scientific journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. He holds a PhD in microbiology and immunology from Queen's University.
Expert has served as an expert witness in a number of legal proceedings; mostly in the area of clinical microbiology. He has testified in both civil and criminal proceedings.
He holds two patents on clinical microbiology testing and has actively worked with several companies in developing new diagnostic microbiology tests and advised other companies in the area of cancer screening testing.
Expert has extensive experience in metabolic/enzyme engineering, cell biology, recombinant DNA technology, and protein expression and synthesis. Beginning with his doctoral thesis and continuing on through his time at a NASA research institute and several universities, Expert focused on extremophiles. He conducted pioneering genetic manipulation experiments in methanogens.
Expert has published extensively in this area and has served on several federal advisory panels for grant review.
Expert has applied his expertise in microbiology to a wide variety of problems: by skills and approach he is a problem solver. Expert has extensive experience in:
a wide variety of laboratory techniques;
writing papers and grants;
teaching and training others;
and performing as part of large interdisciplinary team.
Expert has worked with a client to research and develop a novel platform for rapid in vitro diagnosis of microbial infections. This platform does not use PCR and will be useful in many applications. His involvement was so extensive he is named a co-inventor. Expert served as an expert witness in microbial diagnosis of sepsis in a criminal case with a charge of involuntary manslaughter. The involuntary manslaughter charge was dropped. Expert served as an expert witness in a civil case involving a claim of Mycobacterial avium infection due to working conditions. Expert has worked with a start-up biotechnology company with a novel lung cancer diagnostic platform. He provided assistance in external communications for the company.
