Mechanical Noise/Vibration
ID: 108346
Ohio, USA
Expert has significant experience in diagnosing, modeling, measuring, and controlling vibration problems in automotive systems and components. He is the foremost authority on hydraulic engine mounts, gear-clutch rattle analysis, and brake damping design. He has been a consultant to several companies and has devised new or improved vibration measurement or computational methods. Expert is also very familiar with structure-borne noise paths and power flow analysis techniques. Expert has led a team of US experts that participated in a workshop on this topic in India.
Expert has over 24 years of research and consulting experience in air conditioning and air or gas compressor noise. His computer codes on computer simulations and pulsation analysis are widely used for design purposes in both industry and academia. His insight and deep knowledge have been helpful in solving many noise and vibration problems, including valve impacts, shell resonances, manifold and muffler systems, liquid slugging, and others.
As one of the nation's leading researchers in gear noise, Expert's work has been sponsored by automotive companies, national laboratories, and federal agencies. He has published over 20 articles and has given keynote lectures at international meetings. He has been effective in recognizing the roles of bearings in noise transmission, casing acoustics, and overall geared systems dynamics. In addition, Expert has solved the difficult problem of quantifying gear noise perception (rating or metric) based on objective vibro-acoustic measurements. Expert was a member of the US panel on vibration engineering that toured Korea in 1993. Also, Expert led the US panel on vibration and noise engineering that toured India in 1996.
Expert is one of the premier experts on the modeling of machinery vibration and noise phenomena. His specialty is narrow band methods that incorporate structural or acoustic modes. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches have been used in conjunction with finite and boundary element codes. Other techniques Expert has used to solve vibration problems include modal analysis, ray tracing, and transfer matrix. Expert heads the noise control methods committee of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering and serves on its Board of Directors.
Expert is one of the few active researchers in the areas of pneumatic actuators and shock absorbers. His specialty is in modeling nonlinear compliance, friction, and fluid flow characteristics in the context of the overall system dynamics. He has devised new rotary air valve concepts and demonstrated the proof of his concepts. He has also designed and implemented new control algorithms. Expert has published over 15 articles in this area.
As a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley, Expert conducted research in the Dynamic Stability Lab, on the rotating disk acoustic problem. His work with acoustic noise issues has been applied to a variety of areas, from air conditioning systems to automobiles. He can answer questions on building acoustics and acoustical materials.
