Corrosion fatigue covers a wide range of phenomena from environmentally affected fatigue growth to stress corrosion cracking. Expert has been involved in several major corrosion fatigue investigations. He contributed to EPRI work on corrosion fatigue in fossil boilers and has investigated CF and SCC in other contexts such as rail wagons, civil structures and pressure equipment.
Expert has spent much of his career in the electric power industries including coal, oil, gas, nuclear, hydro and alternative generation. His expertise is in the mechanical areas of these industries particularly pressure equipment, rotating equipment and structures. He has worked on the economics of operation in the areas of life assessment and maintenance evaluation. Because of his wide experience he has been asked to participate in several Due Diligence exercises associated with the sale of power stations.
Expert worked in the nuclear industry during the development of the FFS codes which led to BS 7910. He has also had experience in API 579/ASME FFS-1. He has applied the methods in dozens of major industry case studies and as part of return to service activities following investigations. He has written a number of papers investigating the conservatism or otherwise of these codes. Recently he supervised a major research program in the non-destructive measurement of residual stress.
Expert has worked on many fatigue crack investigations in the power, transport, civil structure and petroleum/chemical industries. He conducts not only the fracture surface inspections, microscopy and testing but also the engineering calculations relating to loads and fracture mechanics. He is the author of numerous papers in the area in particular on thermal shock cracking and has worked on code development in Europe and Australia.
Expert has substantial experience in applying fracture mechanics to investigations of actual failures in a wide range of industries. He conducts not only the site inspections, fractography, scanning electron microscopy and materials testing but also the engineering calculations relating to loads and fracture mechanics. He has contributed several theoretical journal papers in the area.
Expert's postgraduate studies were in the area of finite element methodology and he worked on code development. He is also an expert on analytical methods without which the FEM cannot be checked. He has conducted numerous major stress analysis investigations, including several where it was required to resolve conflicting FEM assessments. He has contributed to mechanical engineering design code development in Europe and Australia and taught in the area and written many relevant articles.
Failure analysis in engineering requires a holistic approach considering factors such as economics, design, operations, maintenance, human factors and cultural issues. Expert has been asked to conduct numerous investigations involving all these factors as well as the basic engineering and fracture mechanics. Expert is on the editorial board of the Engineering Failure Analysis Journal and regularly publishes in the area.
Welding is central to many major failures. Knowledge of the welding processes, metallurgy, damage and corrosion mechanisms, creep, fatigue, non-destructive testing is key to supporting welding development or failure investigations. Expert is one of the most experienced workers in the field and frequently publishes in the area. Recently he he supervised a major research project on measurement of welding residual stress using neutron and x-ray synchrotron techniques.
