Materials Science, Patents, Fiber Optics, Laser Medical Devices
ID: 719614
Connecticut, USA
Over the years, he has spent much of his time evaluating the mechanical and optical properties of materials, both organic and inorganic, and during a period of about four to five years, a significant amount of time was spent on the failure and reliability of coated silica substrates. In addition, he has worked with selected inorganic coatings, and the modification of both polymeric and inorganic surfaces, particularly at the interfaces of dissimilar materials. He also has some familiarity with fiberglass composites and has two patents in the area.
For the past 16 years, Expert has devoted considerable time to various applications of fiber optics to the medical, industrial, and military fields, and has determined needs, designed products or components, and characterized final products, especially in relation to their resistance failure. In addition, he has been very active in standards work, setting test requirements for short-haul fibers in both the national and international arenas. He has three patents relating to new optical fiber and related systems.
Expert is a registered patent attorney and for over 20 years, has frequently faced decisions of patentability, infringement, and the value of patenting versus mere proprietary protection for both the U.S. and foreign areas. He has significant experience with his and his co-workers' inventions on specific writing, documentation to protect intellectual rights, and on replying to PTO actions. Over the past seven to ten years, he has also had experience in evaluating the validity of patents, and has assigned rights as related to buyouts. Most recently, he has had experience in preparing for interference action against earlier-issued patents. In general, he has significant experience in terms related to patent research and analysis.
Since 1969, Expert has regularly studied the advantageous and deleterious effects of radiation (particularly high-energy radiation) on elastomers, thermoplastics, and silica-based materials. In the latter, the effects on the optical and mechanical properties were investigated. He has studied the improvement in mechanical and thermal properties, and the degradation of these properties for polymers, co-polymers, and polymer blends. He is also co-author of one basic patent related to elastomeric polymers in this area.
Expert has taught graduate courses in organic photochemistry, and has studied differences in operation of various types of photoinitiators, UV-curing of coatings for ceramic and metallic substrates, and reaction and modification of chemicals unders UV stimulation.
In attacking assigned problems and needs in corporate and consulting modes, Expert has developed the skills necessary to address the entire situation, leading to the best solution(s) within the grasp of the company's capacity to achieve. Technology assessment and transfer also fall within this general category. He has had experience particularly since 1983 in this area. Also in the past few years, he has had extensive experience aiding small, startup, early growth companies in these areas.
