Expert has been responsible for developing mass spectroscopic methods for use on environmentally and biologically significant compounds. While he has employed HPLC/MS and CE/MS on quadrupoles, sectors and ion trap mass spectrometers for positive and negative ion detection of specific compounds, Expert has extensive experience in analyzing environmentally and biologically significant compounds using other methods. These include direct probe MS, gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC/HRMS), and MS/MS. GC/MS analysis has been used for the determination of volatile organic compounds desorbed from cartridges (e.g. tenax) semivolatile organics in the environment (e.g. PAH's, PCB, TCDD, and pesticides) and pharmaceuticals. Expert is experienced in EI, CI, and NCI techniques using low resolution, high resolution, and tandem mass analyzers. His research in mass spectrometry has resulted in over 230 publications and presentations.

Expert has worked on the development and evaluation of electrospray HPLC/MS for the analysis of high molecular weight opioid peptides at the femtomolar level, as well as the analysis of cyclodextrins to correlate chemical modification of the structure with binding to organophosphate poisons. He has also worked on the development of electrospray HPLC/MS methods to insure food safety, and has evaluated the use of electrospray HPLC/MS to determine compounds of environmental interest. These include dyes, pesticides, and herbicides. He currently has four electrospray HPLC/MS systems in the laboratory. This experience ranges from impurity and metabolite identification to quantitative analysis of target drugs for pharmacokinetic studies.

Expert's pioneering work in HPLC/MS has demonstrated that this method can be used to perform analyses of compounds not amenable to analysis by GC/MS or MS/MS. He developed a research program around HPLC/MS and HPLC/MS/MS using electrospray, thermospray and particle beam interfaces. He investigated fundamental principles of the applications of these techniques to current analytical problems. He has used HPLC/MS for the analysis of EPA Appendix VIII compounds, dyes, pesticides, herbicides, numerous drugs and their metabolites of pharmaceutical interest (e.g., AIDS drugs, anticancer drugs, antimalarials), mycotoxins and their metabolites, natural products, peptides, nucleotides, and proteins. He has seven HPLC/MS interfaces: two thermospray, one particle beam and four electrospray. He has over 230 publications and presentations in the area of HPLC/MS.


For the past nine years, Expert has been working with FDA, developing new, more specific and more sensitive methods to detect trace residues in food products. His work primarily used LC/MS, GC/MS, and LC methods to detect antibiotics and common veterinary drugs in foods as well as pesticides and herbicides in food products. Currently Expert is working on technological advancements in LC/MS, researching novel ways to detect and quantitate food allergens based on proteomic approaches, He is working with clients in the area of protein marker discovery, protein characterization and protein quantitation. Additionally, he has developed novel procedures to detect food allergens and pharmaceutical products in manufacturing facilities to insure minimal cross contamination in consumer products.

Expert has been using mass spectrometry for the past 25 years to perform trace analyses in biological and environmental media. He has worked with numerous pharmaceutical companies, FDA, EPA, and the National Institute of Drug Abuse in developing and validating methods as well as analyzing samples in the 0.1 pg/mL to 1ng/mL range.

Expert gas used LC high resolution MS/MS to characterize and identify proteins via enzymatic digestion digestion followed LC/MS/MS and database searching and by peptide sequencing to identify proteins and to quantitate proteins. Also he has analyzed intact proteins to determine stability with time under various test conditions as well as activity via an affinity assay.
