Expert is a qualified actuary who has specialised in investment. He has been a member of numerous committees and working parties established by the actuarial, investment and pensions management professions. Two of the research working parties that he has chaired on behalf of the actuarial profession for several years involved bond rating and portfolio performance. Other working parties were concerned with stochastic modelling as well as regulation, education and compulsory professional development.
While he has authored or co-authored only a dozen or so papers these have included the control, modelling, management and performance measurement of portfolios. He has also published a number of articles on various investment topics. He has lectured on different aspects of investment in Europe, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Apart from his work as an unpaid trustee for various charities, his current professional activity is largely confined to acting as an expert witness in investment for, mainly, civil actions or disciplinary tribunals where negligence or fraud has been alleged. Less frequently, but recently, he has been employed in assessing the risks and recommending risk reduction structures for several investment houses.
For a number of years until it was taken over Expert acted as a consultant for a large Luxembourg-based insurance company specialising in the sale of life investment-based life assurance products to high net worth individuals to assess their risk management procedures. In particular as these procedures were related to the selection, monitoring and management of independent hedge fund managers and their products. Expert was invited by the local authorities opposing the construction of terminal 5 at Heathrow to provide evidence on third party risk (pro bono - because the authorities had set aside insufficient funds to instruct a specialist airport construction firm).
