Expert's consulting firm, is a full-service business and technical research organization providing information that brings results. Their service mark is to "turn information into intelligence."(TM) He and his staff are highly trained marketing and scientific personnel and include Ph.D.s who are experts in their respective fields. Although they perform many of the more generalized search functions, they specialize in high technology issues. Expert and his associates have access to all the specialized databases necessary for doing a comprehensive search. One of Expert's colleagues, a Ph.D. scientist, is based in Washington D.C. for direct access to the Patent and Trademark Office. This enables his group to examine older patents and drawings, "search the shoes," and speak with examiners. Many of Expert's associates are scientists with Ph.D.s in such disciplines as chemistry, electrical engineering, and biomedical engineering. In addition to these scientists, he employs marketing experts for survey work and interviewing.
Expert is an expert patent searcher. Some of his unusual techniques have enabled patent attorneys to have the validity of existing patents overturned while in other cases he was able to save clients significant amounts of money in royalties by not only pointing out the possible infringement of existing patents but also by assisting in the redesign of a process to avoid the infringement altogether.
Expert and his coworkers are experts in the search for new technology, evaluation of this new technology for a specific business, and the development of this new technology to strategically adapt into the existing business. They also provide assistance in technology transfer between government laboratories and private industry as well as the formation of strategic alliances between companies for their mutual benefit. The group has first-hand knowledge of the inner working of these arrangements, having negotiated some of these deals for themselves as well as others.
Expert has advised clients in methodologies for employees to perform their work at home using a computer and modem. He has helped corporations set up temporary and permanent home office environments for their employees, assisting in the selection of hardware, software, and furniture and in preparing for the "joys and pitfalls of working from home." He also counsels clients for the mental as well as the physical changes in modifying and adjusting to the new work environment.
Expert has had over 30 years of experience in the chemistry lab. After earning his Ph.D. in chemistry, along with a minor in physics, he spent the next 20 years working in industry. He has been a consulting chemist since 1985 and heads his own consulting firm, having expertise in electrochemistry. His experience includes the electrolytic refining and electrowinning of non-ferrous and precious metals, electroplating, and electroanalytical work. He has developed water and waste treatment processes to meet EPA guidelines and offers waste disposal assistance as part of his consulting business. He is an expert in the use of computers in the laboratory for sample management, information retrieval, data reduction, automated analysis, work processing, and certification assistance. He has developed prototypes of dedicated automatic monitors, chemical and biochemical analysis and testing instrumentation, fiber optic applications for dimension movement and pressure flow, and other proprietary and custom applications. Expert is associated with a number of privately owned independent laboratories, which he uses as resources in his consulting work.
Expert maintains a small laboratory with a group of very talented biomedical engineers. Their expertise is as a contract laboratory for clients in developing working prototypes, from initial concept through animal trials. The use of fiber optics in medical devices are one of the specialty areas. Expert's consulting firm is a privately held research, development, and consulting organization. His company has a consulting base ranging from extremely large multinational organizations featured in the Fortune Magazine top 10 to mid-sized corporations in the Fortune 500. It also consults with small, privately held, and, in some cases, family-owned businesses. The major focus of Expert's consulting organization is management consulting, competitive intelligence, information management, information retrieval, process control, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS). He and his associates consider themselves to be problem solvers. They state that they are able to act quickly and competitively to any problem. They are able to target new business opportunities for their client companies, solve both business and technical problems, and provide detailed applications and solutions through the use of outside information resources. Their staff of Ph.D. scientists (which includes chemists, biomedical engineers, electrical engineers, and computer scientists), are able to provide a full service solution to almost any problem. Their technical specialties are chemical- and biomedical-related projects. The company has won research awards from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the National Institutes of Health. They specialize in consulting, research and development for high technology applications, and developing prototype instrumentation and computer software for specialized needs. In the past, they have worked with applications such as fiber optic technology based instrumentation for biomedical applications, process monitoring and control, and new instrumentation. The company has also developed new electromagnetic flow meters, environmentally responsible management systems, and computer software. It was also a prime contractor for the Department of Defense.
Expert's and his coworkers' approach to research and competitive intelligence is to provide a detailed understanding of a particular market, technology, or company. They seek to provide not simply research, but analysis and information that is useful to their clients. With expertise in market development, marketing research, marketing strategy studies, market testing, surveys, and all scientific disciplines, the group understands technology and its implications. Their research is done in stages, starting with on-line research. They develop a market/company/technology "snapshot" by researching reports that discuss market size, trends, key players, etc. They examine published literature including business magazines, industry journals and newsletters, analysts reports, and newspapers. In order to determine alternatives for their clients, the company studies national trends and identifies individuals to call during the next stage of their work.
In the second stage, they combine the results of the on-line research with phone interviews and competitive intelligence. Additionally, they employ branching logic, allowing them to explore additional areas. To ensure accuracy in the phone interviews, they approach a range of individuals, including middle management and executive-level employees. They also rephrase the questions within the interview as a means of validating the responses. The extent to which the group conducts their studies depends on the scope of the project as defined by time and budgets. They will also include company literature and catalogs where possible. Their reports generally consist of an executive summary, a narrative and analysis, and appendices. When appropriate, they will also provide recommendations for further study and interviews. In the final report, they address each of the issues and sub-issues defined in their client's project requests.
