Hydraulics/Hydrology, Stormwater Management, Environmental Engineering, Heat Transfer, Spreadsheets
ID: 730717
Utah, USA
Expert's PhD research was concerned with biological wastewater treatment. Since then, he has taught a variety of environmental engineering subjects at both the undergraduate and graduate level, with emphasis on the areas of municipal wastewater treatment and industrial wastewater treatment. He has also supervised graduate student research in wastewater treatment topics and published articles in this area. He has prepared spreadsheets for activated sludge design and operations calculations, and has authored several online, continuing education courses for Professional Engineers on wastewater treatment topics.
Expert regularly taught a senior level hydraulics/hydrology course with emphasis on stormwater management. He has also prepared several spreadsheets for stormwater management calculations, such as hydraulic design of storm sewers, detention pond routing, and detention pond design. He has also authored several online, continuing education courses for Professional Engineers on stormwater management topics.
He carried out heat transfer and fluid flow calculations to help a client demonstrate that a proposed process for production of biocoal from wood chips could be operated in such a way that it would be energy self-sufficient. That is so that the process would produce enough byproduct energy to supply its energy input needs. He prepared spreadsheets for an engineering firm to make a variety of calculations for gravity flow in partially full pipes, including flow of water and flow of oil.He prepared spreadsheets for natural gas pipeline calculations, including calculation of oxygen and methane concentrations during a purging process and estimation of a gas leakage rate. Expert has taught fluid mechanics to civil engineering, mechanical engineering and engineering science students over a period of 30 years. Since retiring from engineering education, he has been active in preparation of Excel spreadsheets for fluid mechanics/hydraulics/hydrology calculations, including "low cost, easy to use Excel spreadsheets" in the areas of pipe flow, open channel flow, pipe flow rate measurement, and custom spreadsheets prepared for clients for applications such as natural gas pipeline calculations and calculations of required diameters for oil drainage through partially full pipelines. He has also authored several online, continuing education courses for Professional Engineers on fluid flow topics.
