Expert is one of the leading international experts on human tolerance for heat, cold, and work; clothing for comfort and protection against extreme environments; the fibers and fabrics used in clothing; measurement of thermal environments and their effects on people; and man-machine-environment systems. He also collaborates with physicians investigating metabolism, weight regulation, and temperature regulation.

During the last 20 years, Expert has served as a consultant to most of the major fiber manufacturers in the U.S. and has done continuing research on such items as sleeping bags, boots and gloves. He has studied body armor and other protective clothing for the military and auxiliary cooling for workers in nuclear plants and at hazardous waste sites. In addition, Expert is active in the areas of indoor air quality and human physiology experimentation.

Expert has about 50 years of RDT&E of clothing and protective materials for the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as NATO and British Commonwealth Countries. He has conducted studies for NASA and most fiber, material, and clothing manufacturers, including L.L. Bean, DuPont, 3M, Northface, and Kimberly Clark.

Expert chaired ASHRAE's TC 2.1 Committee on Thermal Physiology and Comfort for many years and continues to be a member. He has researched and written extensively on the topic, and continues to be a leader in the area as an Organizing Committee member of the biennial International Conference on Environmental Ergonomics, as well as a national and invited international guest lecturer (e.g., in Japan and Korea in 2002).


Dr. Goldmant consulted for the EPA on the provision of auxiliary cooling at HAZMAT sites.He consulted for North Carolina State University on the design and conduct of human research studies on the effects of clothing on the wearer.From 1987 to the present, Expert has been a consultant on heat and cold stress effects and injury prevention for the National Football League.For GPS nuclear, he consulted on the reduction of heat stress during clean-up operations at the Three Mile Island nuclear site.Expert consulted for Nestle's Corporation on the protection of cold room workers.

He is an adjunct Professor at Boston University and North Carolina State University at Raleigh. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Rhode Island and a Visiting Lecturer at MIT. He has served as a Senior Consultant to the China National Garment Research and Design Center. Expert is a regular reviewer and former Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Applied Physiology and the International Journal of HVAC&R Research, and has served on the Board of Directors of ASHRAE.
