Geomechanics and Material Testing
ID: 713166
Arizona, USA
Expert is internationally known for fundamental research and applications covering a wide range of engineering problems. He has developed and applied realistic material models and computational procedures for characterizing the behavior of soils, rocks, concrete, ceramics and electronic semiconductor materials, and interfaces and joints. Sixteen books authored or edited by him and over 245 papers are used in academia and in practice.
Expert has designed and constructed new devices for mechanical and nondestructive testing of materials and interfaces under static and cyclic loading with environmental effects such as fluids.
A significant portion of Expert's recent research has involved developing a unified constitutive modelling approach (called the disturbed state concept) for characterizing thermomechanical response of electronic packaging materials. This research involves such factors as elastic, plastic, and creep strains as well as stress paths, microcracking, fracture and damage, fatigue, and cycles to failure. This work also involves calibration of models from laboratory test data on solder interfaces and ceramic materials as well as the development of advanced thermomechanical and nondestructive tests (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) leading to advanced computer procedures for design, reliability, and manufacturing of chip-substrate systems.
Expert has developed new computational procedures and testing devices for free surface flow (in porous media) and transport of salt water and contaminants.
Expert has developed technology for manufacturing construction materials on the moon from lunar simulants with fiber admixtures through a process of thermal liquefaction via solar energy without the use of water. The resulting materials are called intermediate ceramic composites (ICC).
