Free and Antioxidant Radical Chemistry and Biology
ID: 107704
Iowa, USA
Expert has had considerable experience with biological oxidants and antioxidants. He has investigated the chemistry and biochemistry of both small molecule antioxidants, such as ascorbate and tocopherol, and antioxidant enzymes. His present research deals with the fundamental antioxidant chemistry of vitamins C and E (ascorbate and tocopherol). He is also working with thiols such as glutathione. He has experience with antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase.
Expert has considerable experience in the study of various oxygen-centered free radicals such as superoxide, hydroxyl radical, and peroxyl free radicals. His research has dealt with the fundamental chemistry of these radical species. It has also dealt with how they interact to cause biological oxidations such as lipid peroxidation.
Expert has been a pioneer in the study of free radical chemistry of biologically related free radicals. He was at the forefront of the study of iron and chelating agents in this chemistry. He continues to be active in this area of research.
Expert has expertise in the photosensitized production of singlet oxygen and free radicals. These studies have involved promazine and chlorpromazine and riboflavin. They also include work on hematoporphyrin derivative, a photosensitizer being tested for the treatment of cancer. Expert has used EPR spin trapping as well as laser flash photolysis in these studies.
Expert has over 15 years of experience in research on cellular lipid peroxidation processes. He has developed new approaches to detect the free radicals associated with cellular lipid peroxidation. He has also investigated how ascorbate, tocopherol and nitric oxide interact to serve as cellular antioxidants.
Expert has developed new ways to detect and quantitate nitric oxide. A major current research focus is on the mechanisms by which nitric oxide serves as a cellular and tissue antioxidant.
