Expert is a registered Electrical PE in the following states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. He has over 30 years of electrical and electronic design and test experience on a variety of products in numerous industries, including telecommunications, industrial automation and control, semiconductors and consumer goods. He is a proud graduate of North Carolina State University receiving his MSECE and Penn State University receiving a BSEE. He is also a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) and a Certified Power Quality Professional (CPQ).
His expertise and skill sets are in the areas of forensic engineering, reverse engineering, product teardowns, safety compliance, fire investigations, product liability, patent infringement, hardware design, power supply design, embedded processor design, high speed circuit design in both analog and digital systems, PCB design, EMC/EMI/RFI standards/compliance, telecommunication and industrial automation/controls. In the course of his career, he has also been heavily involved with product testing and compliance (Safety and EMC) in the design phase, and in post-design product failure analysis, including power and signal line surge analysis.
He has served as an expert witness and forensic engineer on many cases involving a wide variety of electrical and electronic devices and applications, and on some projects drilling down to find the root cause of failure. Some projects have focused on patent infringement and reverse engineering and others include fire hazards, product liability and aspects of shock and human safety. He has analyzed designs in reference to user abuse and unintended operation which is often an overlooked aspect in most product safety reviews.
For his current employer and his previous employer, he was the lead engineer responsible for all the electrical safety and compliance testing and requirements (UL, FCC, NEBS, CE and ETSI) of their electrical and electronic products. He is quite knowledgeable regarding the UL and IEC standards, requirements, protocols and documentation required for product compliance in both the US Europe and Asia. He has a broad and proven background encompassing both design and compliance testing. Having performed similar functions at several past employers, he has been able to develop a strong working relationship with the safety and compliance groups at Underwriters Laboratory (U.S.), TUV Rheinland of North America (U.S.), and TUV SUD (China).
