From September 2016 onward, Expert has been Special Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme for guarantee and fund structures for SME lending (specifically East Africa and South East Asia) to the Energy Access sector. Additionally, since May 2016, he has been Independent Investment Committee member for Mergence debt and equity infrastructure funds in South Africa. From March 2016 he has acted as Special Advisor to the United Nations Capital Development Fund for Energy and Financial Services Funding structures and lending platforms in Africa and South east Asia.
From May 2015 onward, Expert has been acting Board Member of the Middle East Association, a business promotion agency operating at senior government and private sector level in the MENA region. From August 2016 he has acted as an International Expert Advisor to the International Solar Alliance, launched by the Governments of India and France at COP21, which promotes country-scale investment programmes in Solar on a global scale. Between April 2013 and Feb 2016 he was Managing Director of the Investment Banking Transaction and Origination team at the The UK Green Investment Bank, where he was responsible for onshore wind and hydro, Energy Efficiency, Public Sector Infrastructure, EE Funds, and commercial and industrial client lending (debt, equity, mezzanine and fund of fund investment). During this time, Expert also acted as Investment Committee member for the International Fund, where he focused on renewable power generation investments in South Africa, Kenya and India.
Between January 2004 and 2011, Expert was CEO of Sterling Waterford Securities, a South Africa-based Asset Management and Advisory firm focusing on ETF Asset management and Infrastructure and Power Generation Investment (direct private equity investment, advisory and listed equities and structured products platforms) in Sub-Saharan Africa. He was Key Authorised Individual Director of the business and regulated person to oversee its hedge fund management (Category IIA) and discretionary investment management (Category II) licenses. His teams performed strategy and transaction advisory for clients (sell side) and direct investment (buy side) in Wind and Solar projects in REIPP. He was responsible for overall group strategy, oversight of subsidiary investment companies in South Africa, the UK, Malta and Mauritius, and made international news by inaugurating the first Listing of two subsidiary Carbon Funds on the JSE Securities Exchange (South Africa) in 2005. Further deals included over 30 structured transactions in emerging markets for acquisition and sale of project equity and carbon credit streams from renewables projects (South Africa, Indian Wind, Thailand Biogas, Guatemalan Geothermal, Brazil Fuel switching, Rwanda cookstoves, Turkey Wind, China Wind, Vietnam Hydro) and a number of business acquisitions.
Expert was previously a senior manager strategy for Deloitte Consulting after stint at a boutique M&A firm, General Guarantee and Trust in South Africa, performing listings and advisory.
