SMOKESTACK ANALYSIS; SMOKESTACK EMISSION; SMOKESTACK FLOW. Expert has worked extensively with smokestack emission analysis. He developed a method for calculating power plant emission rates and has published writings on the determination of fluorides in stack gases, methods to interpret stack sampling data, and field checking meter calibrations on EPA-type sampling trains.
EMISSION CHARACTERIZATION. Having sampled thousands of power boiler smokestacks, Expert authored two extensive research projects that characterize coal and oil emissions. He developed the F-factor, which converts emissions concentrations into weight per unit heat values, from which most combustion regulations are written. He has also authored six papers on combustion emissions.
AIR ANALYSIS INSTRUMENT; AIR-POLLUTION MONITORING EQUIPMENT; POLLUTION GAS ANALYZER. Expert co-founded a smokestack sampling instrument company in 1974. He was Vice President and designed the company's first products. These instrument designs are still the standard of source sampling equipment today. He also authored six air-sampling equipment papers for publication.
PARTICULATE MONITORING; PARTICULATE TESTING. Expert was responsible for developing the testing methodology and equipment that became Method 5, which is EPA's method for measuring particulates. These methods were refined in field applications under Expert's direction. He was also one of the three principal authors of Methods 1 through 8. In addition, during his 11-year association with the Public Health Service and EPA, Expert developed and directed the source sampling courses for the Air Pollution Training Institute.
