His expertise in the assessment of personal injury is as a clinical psychologist. The profession involves training in behavioural science, by contrast with psychiatrists who train initially in medicine. Their basic training is normally of six years duration. Expert qualified in 1974, and has been chartered since the Royal Charter was recognised. He has also lectured on clinical psychology for a period equivalent to eight full years. He is registered with the Health Professions Council.
From 1988 to 1997 he provided services to hospital physicians and surgeons, and treated patients with back and spinal injuries. He conducted a number of research projects, including one on the prevalence of back pain. Some ten reports have been published under his sole or joint authorship. He has published a book on health behaviour, which includes chapters on movement and pain. At present he works in private practice. Assessment and treatment of personal injury cases form a large part of his work.
He has assessed about three hundred and fifty survivors of car accidents. Their conditions have included none, phobic anxiety, generalised anxiety, reactive depression, and PTSD. He has also given evidence in some immigration and criminal cases.
