Anionic Polymerization.
Expert conducted anionic reaction research during his graduate school study on the rearrangement of cyclopropylcarbinyl organolithiums. His work continued as a scientist at DuPont where he studied the kinetics and mechanisms of Group Transfer Polymerization (mechanistically an anionic process), on which he wrote several scholarly papers. While a professor at The University of Akron, Expert continued research on anionic processes where he studied the malonate-induced polymerization of methacrylates under an ICI-sponsored research project. In addition to his research endeavors, Expert routinely taught anionic polymerization at both undergraduate and graduate levels at The University of Akron.
Carbocation Chemistry.
The principle subject of Expert’s doctoral research at The California Institute of Technology was the small-ring rearrangement of carbocations.
The terminal degree in his formal training was a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from The California Institute of Technology. After postdoctoral work at Duke University, the first portion of his career was spent at E. I. DuPont. The first 4 years were at Central Research & Development where he worked on acrylics and biomaterials. The next 2 years were at DuPont’s largest domestic manufacturing site where he became familiar with Teflon, electronic resins, windshield inner-layers, polyester and nylon.
In 1990, he joined The University of Akron as a professor. Over 17 years, he successfully obtained millions in research grants and published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. In addition, he was a co-inventor on 3 patents and was invited to speak at major conferences over 50 times. He served as chair of The Department of Polymer Science during 1998-2001. Expert published and lectured in areas that include: polycarbonates, kinetics, polymer coatings, Teflon, surface wettability, buckyballs, polymers, block copolymers, free radical polymerization, surface grafting, poly(vinyl chloride), metallocenes, nanocomposities, elastomers, polyesters, water-soluble polymers, polyacrylates, surface analysis, polymer analysis, physical organic chemistry, blood compatibility, and lipid bilayers. In 2001, he was elected chair of the American Chemical Society’s Division of Polymer Chemistry, which is the world’s largest professional organization devoted to polymer science. Expert was named The University of Akron’s Outstanding Researcher of the Year in 2001 and has received numerous other awards. During his career at Akron, he was retained as an expert in over 20 legal cases, many of them concerning chemical and polymer patents. He was deposed numerous times and frequently provided courtroom testimony.
From 2006-2008, Expert was a senior executive at Bausch & Lomb where he oversaw the activities of over 50 scientists in polymer and surface science. Currently, he is the co-owner of the Global Chemical Group, Inc. and continues to serve as an adjunct Professor of Polymer Science at The University of Akron.
Organic Chemistry.
The principle subject of Expert’s higher education concerns mechanistic organic chemistry. From undergraduate research on the ring-opening of dichloroaziridines to graduate work on cyclopropylcarbinyl rearrangement of carbanions and carbocations, Expert has extensive experience in organic chemistry. His first 4 years in DuPont’s Central Research & Development focused on the kinetics and mechanism of Group Transfer Polymerization which culminated in several peer-reviewed publications. During his tenure at The University of Akron, he lectured on Organic Chemistry and conducted fundamental research on the organic chemistry of carbonate and ester bond formation. Perhaps his largest body of work is the organic chemistry of surfaces, encompassing the difference in surface-mediated versus solution reactions with a special focus on free radicals. His postdoctoral work examined the effect of radicals on biological membranes. His most recent industrial experience was to direct the organic chemistry processes in medical device production. Overall, he published over 50 peer-reviewed publications with relevance to organic chemistry.
Polymer Science.
The principle subject of Expert’s research and scholarly experience is polymer science/polymer synthesis/polymers. Starting from his first professional job at E. I. DuPont and continuing to his most recent employment as a Vice President for Polymer & Surface Sciences at Bausch & Lomb, Expert is a world-class expert in polymers. In 1991, he was elected Chairman of the American Chemical Society’s Division of Polymer Chemistry, which is the world’s largest professional organization devoted to polymers. Expert was a member of The College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at The University of Akron, which is the world’s largest academic college devoted to the study of polymers. During 1998-2001, he served as chairman of The Department of Polymer Science and in 2001 was named Outstanding Researcher of the Year at The University of Akron. Expert has extensively consulted in the polymer industry and worked on over 20 legal matters that relate to polymers. He has published over 100+ scholarly articles on matters relevant to polymer science and been invited on over 50 occasions to report his work in plenary lectures.
Over 20 court appearances, depositions, litigation prep, etc.
