He is also an expert in the leadership of other Hazard Study stages which are much under-valued in the industry by which offer important advantages. Hazard Studies 1 and 2 can offer great benefit to Companies in the early stages of development of a new plant or process, [Hazard Study 3 is what is now referred to by most industries as "HazOp"], Hazard Studies 4 and 5 are useful during plant construction and before commissioning, and Hazard Study 6 is a useful review technique for when a plant has been operating for a few months. HazOp can also be used for existing plants which have been subject to changes or a long time has passed since a general safety review, or even for those that have never had a formal safety review before.
Some plants and factories are not suitable for these procedures, for example multi-product batch plants are often too flexible to enable the HazOp technique to work reliably. Expert has developed his own 'What-If' technique and software to provide a formal process safety review of such plants.
Expert has much experience in analysing pump and pipe systems for water hammer (also known as surge flow) using modern software. He can analyse pipe systems for vulnerability to water hammer and devise reliable and economic solutions to any problems uncovered. This work also includes the development of software to analyse the results of water hammer analysis to calculate the forces on pipelines as a result of water hammer events.
Expert has much experience in carrying out Risk Assessments on process plants, nowadays often associated with the need to carry out SIL assessments [Safety Integrity Level] to satisfy current legislation. He has developed his own software to carry out Risk Graph and LoPA [Layers of Protection Analysis] studies on process risks, He is also familiar with Bow Tie analysis to help with this.
He has consulted for Jacobs Engineering, Ineos, WorleyParsons, Day & Zimmerman, AMEC, Stopford, M W Kelloggs, HazTech, GlaxoSmithKline, Epsilo PharmaServices, BP, Gulf Fluor, Buss Chemtech, Lloyds Register, Excelerate Energy, Outokumpu, Corus, Fluon, Conoco Philips, and smaller companies. These were a variety of projects across all his areas of work.
