Expert was in charge of the mechanical testing facility at Rutgers Center for Ceramic Research. This included universal testing machines, hardness testers, creep machines, static fatigue, and continuous feed high temperature testing. He has also taught the basic graduate level mechanical properties of ceramics course from 1982 to 2007. He can answer in-depth questions regarding ceramic toughness, static fatigue, and impact energy.
Expert's Ph.D thesis was on the subject of creep of aluminum oxide. He has published two extensive review articles on creep of ceramics in the Journal of Material Science. Currently, he directs a thesis on the topic of creep of silicon nitride and superplasticity of zirconia nanocrystalline composites.
Expert has taught three short courses on the subject of ceramic-ceramic composites. He has studied the effect of bridging by fibers and whiskers on the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. In order to do this he developed a new technique using a Raman microscope to measure stresses at the crack tip.
After retirement Expert consulted regularly with Idaho National Laboratory on improved processing of fuel pellets. He studied isostatic pressing of ceria as a surrogate for nuclear fuels. He also developed a model for calculating green strength of pellets.
Much of Expert's career has been spent in powder processing. He has directed many studies which used particle size distribution measurements, zeta potential measurements and rheology of slips measurements.
Expert's experience with binders is largely with tape casting binders and plasticizers. He has studied the interaction between them, the effect of water, their ability to act as a dispersant, their ability to impart strength (tested tensile specimens) and their burnout qualities.
Expert has lead an effort to fabricate composites by infiltrating blackglas@ with inert and active fillers into woven Nextel 320 fibers. He has tested the following mechanical properties: tensile, bending, compression and shear strength at room temperature, elastic modulus and creep.
Several of Expert's students have studied tape casting of alumina substrates.
Starting with his own Ph.D thesis he has made creep studies (with his students) numerous times. He has studied creep of superplastic materials, silicon nitride, fiber composites, YAG and nano-alumina/zirconia.
Expert and students have made ASTM standard bending tests for individual industrial sponsors. Expert has directed a student in making hydraulic burst and ball on ring fracture tests and studied the Weibull distributions and shape factors.
He has directed a student in Weibull statistics measurements. He has taught techniques for analyzing the statistics and time dependent behavior and has initiated such an effort with a company for which he consults to improve reliability.
Expert has taught colloidal chemistry as it is applied to dispersion of ceramic powder. He has directed several theses on the subject and consulted with industry on this subject.
During his last few years at Rutgers University he studied sintering. One of his students defended her thesis on the subject sintering parameter measurement for silicon nitride. She studied second stage liquid phase sintering. Two students have studied anisotropy during sintering. He have filed a patent disclosure for a method of reducing or eliminating anisotropy.
For almost his entire career Expert has lead graduate student research in tape casting and is widely sited in the literature on the subject. This research has included organic additive, the effect of water in non-aqueous systems, aqueous tape casting, anisotropic shrinkage, defects, and aqueous and non-aqueous dispersants.
While at MIT Expert synthesized silicon nitride by a laser heating method and studied sintering of silicon and silicon nitride. At Rutgers he studied carbothermal reduction and nitridation of silicon nitride powder, One student studied creep and another sintering of silicon nitride.
Is a regular consultant for Idaho National Laboratory on the topic of ceramic processing of reprocessed nuclear fuel (MOX).Recently helped a company establish a program for evaluating statistical and time dependent failure of glass parts. Has consulted on tape casting and organic additives towards better dispersion of powder.
