ID: 716104
Maryland, USA
Expert has worked extensively with a variety of saccharides (sugars, carbohydrates). He can answer in-depth questions on the chemistry and structure determination of, monosaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. He also has experience with crystallization of sugars and their derivatives at the microscale level.
Expert is an internationally recognized expert on the chemical synthesis of oligosaccharides. During his career, which spans some thirty years, Expert has designed and executed syntheses of a large number of oligosaccharides. These are described in over one hundred papers published in international journals. Many of the oligosaccharides he has synthesized are fragments of 0-polysaccharides of bacterial pathogens. He and his colleagues synthesize oligosaccharides to be used to study interactions of carbohydrate antigens and biologically active proteins, such as immunoglobulins. He is a master of blocking strategies in carbohydrates, which helps him in manipulating their hydroxyl groups and, eventually, turn out complicated derivatives he and his colleagues use to satisfy their scientific curiosity. The recognition Expert has received by his peers is best represented by the invitation to organize a recent international symposium on synthetic oligosaccharides held during an ACS meeting. He edited a book on synthetic oligosaccharides, published by the American Chemical Society as Volume 560 of its Symposium Series.
Expert is also an expert in separation and instrumental techniques related to synthetic carbohydrate chemistry, such as thin-layer and preparative liquid chromatography, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. He is familiar with sophisticated one and two-dimensional NMR techniques and is able to choose the technique most suitable to solving a structural problem that may arise.
As an internationally recognized authority on synthetic carbohydrate chemistry, Expert has extensive experience in designing and executing multi-step syntheses of complex carbohydrate derivatives. The success of this work depends greatly on the ability of the chemist to manipulate hydroxyl groups in carbohydrates in such a way that the compatibility of blocking groups with various chemistries involved in a multi-step process not be compromised. Complex molecules resulting from each chemical manipulation have to be isolated in pure state and their structure has to be verified. Consequently, Expert has gained expertise in the associated separation and instrumental techniques.

Expert is able to give seminars on various topics dealing with carbohydrate chemistry. |
Vendor Selection |
---|
He has experience locating vendors of complex carbohydrate derivatives, and carbohydrate literature. |
Other Relevant Experience |
---|
It is a well-known fact that an hour in a library can save a chemist a month of work in the laboratory. Thirty years of hands-on experience in carbohydrate chemistry and editorial work for a number of international and national scientific journals have made Expert an expert in the literature related to carbohydrates. He is familiar with journals, monographs, and series of books dealing with carbohydrate chemistry. As such, he can be very helpful in assisting individuals in their literature searches and in directing them to the proper source of information in a time-saving manner. Expert completed a training management program in the chemical synthesis of oligonuleotides at City of Hope Research Institute, Duarte, CA in 1981. |
