Expert's lab made the first molecular measurement of radon binding to a molecular host and is a world expert in noble gases, particularly xenon and radon. Expert is an expert in Xe-129 hyperpolarization and bioimaging.
Expert has more than 25 years of experience in protein chemistry. NIH and NSF funded projects are in the area of protein engineering, protein-based contrast agents, protein drug delivery, and protein nanotechnology. Expert has served as an expert witness in commercial litigation surrounding an enzyme-based project. He showed definitively that the product in question did function as advertised. This case was successfully settled in favor of the defendant, who also won on the counter charges. Expert was deposed in these cases by the plaintiffs.
Expert has roughly 20 years of experience in nucleic acid chemistry, and has been a pioneer in the area of light-activated oligonucleotides as a means of controlling oligo function with high spatiotemporal resolution. NIH has funded this work through R-01 and R-35 mechanisms.
Expert has a broad background in fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy, and has published numerous papers in these areas. In addition, the Expert laboratory is a leading center for MRI contrast agent development, with a focus on the isotope Xe-129. Expert has served as an expert witness for two cases representing plaintiffs who were injured by Omniscan, a common gadolinium MRI contrast agent, which is produced by GE. The first case was settled successfully, in favor of the plaintiffs. Expert was deposed in this case by the defense, a team of GE lawyers.
Expert has broad experience in studying surface chemistry. A current DOE-funded project involves studying the interaction of peptides and metal ions at the air-water interface.
He serves as a reviewer of governmental grant applications, R-01, SBIR, and shared instrumentation proposals. Topics range from biochemistry, biotechnology, imaging science, and bio-analytical chemistry. He served as an expert witness for a lawsuit involving an enzymatic cleaning product, representing the defendants. The expert proved that the enzyme activity was maintained in the product and worked as advertised. The expert oversaw a wide range of experiments, in addition to helping to shape the successful defense. The expert wrote an extensive report, was deposed for 8 hours by the plaintiffs, and prepared for presentation at trial. The case was successfully settled just before expert testimony was required. He served as an expert witness for a lawsuit involving Omniscan, a top-selling gadolinium-based MRI contrast agent. He represented the patient injured by the MRI agent, and the case was successfully settled in the patient's favor. The expert wrote an extensive report documenting the failures in drug testing and reporting. He was deposed for 8 hours by the GE lawyers for the defense. This case was successfully settled in the plaintiff's favor.
