Applied Silica Chemistry
ID: 107838
Florida, USA
The primary focus of Expert's technical work since 1974 has been the chemistry of soluble silica and products derived from silica. These include precipitated products, gels, and sols. He is currently studying the interaction of colloidal ions in dilute solution (e.g. soluble silica and alumina or iron near their precipitation phase boundaries). He is also studying the properties of dilute silica gel systems to determine how the structured gel systems with very high water content influence crystallizing systems. This knowledge can then be applied to better understand silica/silicate's role in many practical situations where silica is used or naturally present. These situations include detergency, water treatment, corrosion control, pulp bleaching, enhanced oil recovery, catalysis, mineral benefication, zeolite synthesis, waste treatment, and the synthesis of other silica derived products such as silicas, gels, and precipitated products. His specific thrust is Al3+, Zr2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, CO32-, Ca2+, and Mg2+ containing solution with pH values at or near their "solubility boundaries."
Potassium silicate is one of several forms of soluble silica. Others include the sodium silicate - the largest volume product, lithium silicate and ammonium silicates. Sodium silicates are used primarily in detergents and making second generation products e.g. precipitated silica, zeolites, silica gels and silica sols. He has extensive practical experience with these materials, including their manufacture and uses.
Additionally, he has been preparing what is hoped to be unique carbon-coated high pore volume and surface area silica gels. These gels are expected to be better metal supports and catalysts.
