Expert wrote his Ph.D. research in the area of thermosetting composite and rubbery materials. After graduation he began work with National Starch and Chemical Company in specialty pressure-sensitive adhesives and moved then to Integra Life Sciences in collagen-based regenerative biomaterials. He made the transition into academics, conducting research in adhesion, polymer nanocomposites, and biodegradable/regenerative biopolymers. He has taught classes in introductory polymer science and advanced classes in polymer viscoelasticity theory, polymer crystallinity, biopolymers, and cosmetic polymers and emulsions. He has particular strength in explaining polymers to general and family audiences, with a series of polymer demonstration shows on nanocomposites, biopolymers, food polymers, sports polymers and polymer history. He has over 30 peer reviewed articles and conference proceedings. He has received sponsored project awards and conducted consulting work in adhesives and adhesion.

Conducted research for a company to help them identify an adhesive that would adhere to a surface contaminated with silicone rubber, but could be cleaned off if subsequent repairs were needed.Conducted research for a government program to attach a heparin binding peptide to collagen sponge to promote clotting.Helped a company develop alternatives for processing ceramic powders for use in a bone regeneration template.
Helped a company extrude halloysite-filled polypropylene fibers.Helped a company identify a radiation resistant adhesive and a lubricant resistant adhesive for special applications.
