Abrasive Technology, Machining, Grinding, Expert Witness, and Engineering
ID: 108285
Ohio, USA
Expert has spent the majority of his career devoted to the study and the technology transfer of grinding processes to the manufacturing industry. The principles of precision grinding of surface and cylindrical workpieces is the subject of his book, "Modern Grinding Process Technology," published in 1992 by McGraw-Hill.
In order to properly utilize the modern-day grinding and abrasive machining processes, the choice of abrasive, cutting fluid, grinding wheel, and the feeds and speeds is critical. Expert has over 20 years of experience in research and shop-floor implementation of state-of-the-art grinding and abrasive processes. He can also provide the necessary specifications for the tools, as well as the expected feeds and speeds to run them
Difficult to machine metals, polymers and whisker-reinforced materials pose a significant problem to the manufacturing engineer. Expert's expertise in grinding processes and abrasive machining provide the answer to both the technical and economical challenges in machining these "next generation" materials.
In combination with conventional grinding processes, creep-feed grinding of ceramics has been researched and tested by Expert in the laboratory and under production conditions. It has been shown to be one of the most effective machining processes for these types of materials. He also provides the total requirements for a grinding facility necessary to perform the proper grinding and machining of ceramics.
Expert began his career as an apprentice gaining practical experience in all conventional and some non-conventional machining techniques. His work in innovative abrasive processes requires an in-depth knowledge of the most up-to-date conventional processes to allow both technical and economical comparisons to be drawn.
Expert has contributed to the 3rd Edition of the book entitled Metalworking Fluids published by CRC Press in (Undisclosed). He has conducted fluid performance testing and was awarded the STLE Editor's Choice Award for his paper on Mist Generation in High-Speed Grinding.

Years: 1979 to 1983 | Employer: General Electric Aircraft Engines | Title: Manufacturing Engineer | Department: |
Responsibilities:A manufacturing methods development engineer responsible for designing and building the first robotic and fully automated turbine blade grinding facility.Advanced Manufacturing Engineer responsible for the technology and project management in the advanced abrasive machining of aircraft engine components. Coordinated a laboratory team that developed a fully automated prototype grinding cell for the precision manufacture of aircraft engine turbine blades and vanes. This program was derived from Expert's research in the UK. Expert's responsibilities were: Lobbying the Department of Defense for funding, project planning, in-house R&D funding, work planning and reporting of activities as well as key technical input. The demonstrator technology and the production of a working system resulted in excess of $13M savings in production costs to GE and the USAF in 1983. During the program a state-of-the-art precision non-contact probe and turbine blade fixturing system was developed and patented by GE. |
