Expert's current research focuses on innovative approaches to digital modelling of built environment using Web based open source technologies capable of playing proactive roles in large scale cross-disciplinary research programmes such as Digital Economy, Digital Agenda, Digital Cultural Heritage, and Sustainable Energy and
Environment. Advances made in the development and application of multi-dimensional multi-modal interactive modelling of architecture and cities coupled with related fields of data, information and public opinions could potentially open up new opportunities for user and community engagement to better address some of the current
global challenges such as widening participation in cultural and wealth creation, climate change conscious design of current and future buildings and cities, enriching the scope and content of life-long learning, and heightened awareness of social and corporate responsibilities for environmental impacts. He has received research funding from a wide range of funding agencies including JISC, AHRC, EPSRC, Royal Society, RIBA Trust Research Awards, The Nuffield Foundation, and Sheffield City Council.

In December 2009, the Union of Students commissioned Expert to develop staged 3D models of the redevelopment of the Union Building in which uCampus has been put into real use in a live project situation. For three months, he has worked with the Union team on the 3D modelling entirely over uCampus. The results from the collaboration are now published on the Students’ Union website. These 3D models were built to inform students and staff about the changes to come as well as to serve the Union team as a basis for planning and design of the new spaces.
