Expert has designed units consisting of refrigerant compressors, heat exchangers, fans, electrical heating elements, electrical controls, and temperature controls. He has also sized heat exchangers for custom application, including condensers, evaporators, and water coils.
Expert has researched comfort levels of people in dynamic applications such as rapid transit. This effort generated an ASHRAE research grant to Kansas State University to more accurately predict human transient and thermal loads. He has also chaired ASHRAE seminars dealing with Aircraft Cabin Air Quality and Sensory Panels in the Evaluation of Indoor Air Quality.
Expert can perform thermal analyses involving sensible and latent loads, conduction, atmospheric pressure, solar loads, and climates. His experience includes using the psychrometric chart for all altitudes.
Expert is experienced in fan and blower selection, installation, and the results of mis-application (encountered frequently). He is familiar with basic principles that must be followed if fans are to perform to their test curves and the derating factors when it is impossible to meet ideal installation criteria.
Expert designed and tested three transit bus air conditioning, heating, and defrosting systems, including much of the electrical power systems. These include the ROHR High Value Bus, DOT Transbus (all hydraulic drive), and the prototype Flexible 870 Bus. His experience with rail includes HVAC systems for AMTRAK, VTA (Santa Clara), MUNI (San Francisco), WMATA (Washington, D.C.), BART (San Francisco), and METRO (Los Angeles). He is currently consulting on new systems for the latter two.
Expert designed systems specifically for high-sensible thermal loading, such as electronic equipment racks. He has designed specific television industry mobile equipment systems, delivered to NBC Sports, and ABC. Most of these systems included custom HVAC units and ducting integrated into the industrial design.
Expert has supervised HVAC systems for U.S. Navy ships, including large cooling and ventilating systems involving chilled water and sea water heat rejection. He has also developed ventilation systems for smaller craft, including Patrol and commercial SWATH and SES boats.
Expert has extensive knowledge of refrigeration systems designed specifically for ships, road, and rail applications.
He is presently a consultant on three active projects with CH2M Hill for rail car air conditioning in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He has a consultant for climate and odor control in a scientific laboratory dealing with air quality.He has been asked to help solve product and system design problems.He has participated as an expert witness and assisted in forensic analysis.
