Expert is one of the leading international experts on human tolerance for heat, cold, and work; clothing for comfort and protection against extreme environments; the fibers and fabrics used in clothing; measurement of thermal environments and their effects on people; and man-machine-environment systems. He also collaborates with physicians investigating metabolism, weight regulation, and temperature regulation.

During the last 20 years, Expert has served as a consultant to most of the major fiber manufacturers in the U.S. and has done continuing research on such items as sleeping bags, boots and gloves. He has studied body armor and other protective clothing for the military and auxiliary cooling for workers in nuclear plants and at hazardous waste sites. In addition, Expert is active in the areas of indoor air quality and human physiology experimentation.

Expert has about 50 years of RDT&E of clothing and protective materials for the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as NATO and British Commonwealth Countries. He has conducted studies for NASA and most fiber, material, and clothing manufacturers, including L.L. Bean, DuPont, 3M, Northface, and Kimberly Clark.

Expert chaired ASHRAE's TC 2.1 Committee on Thermal Physiology and Comfort for many years and continues to be a member. He has researched and written extensively on the topic, and continues to be a leader in the area as an Organizing Committee member of the biennial International Conference on Environmental Ergonomics, as well as a national and invited international guest lecturer (e.g., in Japan and Korea in 2002).
