Request Expert

Expert is a specialist in tribology. His primary expertise is in friction and its consequences during dry sliding of mechanical components. Specific topics of his activity include the measurement of friction coefficients during dry sliding of polymers and ceramics against metals, the measurement and prediction of sliding surface temperatures resulting from frictional heating, the analysis of stresses around sliding contacts (contact mechanics), the wear of polymers and polymer-based composites, the wear of ceramic coatings, and the friction of ice and snow.

Expert has studied these phenomena in a variety of applications. The applications include mechanical face seals, gas path seals, dry sleeve bearings, snow skis, and computer disk-head interactions. He has investigated the wear and failure of orthopaedic joint prostheses, including hip and knee prostheses. He has used finite element methods in much of his work and has developed finite element programs to analyze surface temperatures and contact stresses. He has designed and constructed a variety of mechanical test devices and has been actively teaching mechanical design courses.
