Expert frequently teaches users how to establish an ABC inventory classification scheme to help them prioritize and manage their inventories. Expert's most significant professional success lies in the area of inventory management. He has been responsible for managing inventories of raw material, purchased parts, sub-assemblies, works-in-process, finished goods, and distribution inventories. He has an effective working knowledge of the tools and techniques that can be used to manage inventory. In addition, Expert has been involved with inventory control. He has advised on warehouse and material handling layout, transaction processing, productivity improvements, and related storage and handling issues.
Expert has resorted to various classification and coding systems to improve overall inventory management. These classifications include raw material, purchased parts, sub-assemblies, works-in-process, and finished goods; or they can be assigned by product line. Depending on the classification, different tools are used to manage inventory levels. Expert can effectively classify the inventory and apply the correct tool. He is familiar with Group Technology coding systems, and other inventory and part master coding schemes. These include accounting-and-payables related codes, lot sizing codes, lead time codes, replenishment codes, use codes, inventory classification codes, and bill of material codes.
Expert routinely uses inventory modeling to identify opportunities and the best course of action, given several alternatives. He has used modeling to project, within several percent, future inventory levels given the implementation of various inventory management policies.
To achieve world-class manufacturing results, Expert routinely advises his clients to implement just-in-time inventory management techniques. These involve a focus on perfect, or near perfect quality, point of use storage, little or no safety stock, no excess production, no excess lead time, inventory transaction backflushing, and a kanban "pull" system to reduce throughput time and inventory levels. He teaches clients the subtleties of kanban by using specially designed props.
Expert has worked with many companies who are implementing company-wide integrated computer systems. He becomes heavily involved with the issues that must be addressed to effect a truly integrated system. These include engineering, manufacturing, accounting, sales, marketing, order entry, distribution, and quality.
Most of Expert's career has been spent performing some function of logistics management. He has been a logistics support manager, and managed a warehouse, a shipping department, and a receiving department. He scored the maximum points possible in the logistics examination taken for the APICS CIRM program.
Expert is thoroughly familiar with materials requirements planning, including how it works, its prerequisites, the techniques involved, the required disciplines, and expected results. He has taught and consulted on the subject for more than 11 years, and passed the APICS MRP Certification Examination at the highest level.
Expert has been involved in all areas of materials management and is very effective in advising on issues relating to this area. His involvement spans 17 years as a practitioner followed by 11 years as a consultant and educator.
