UV & LIGHT ABSORPTION. Expert has worked in the area of molecular electronic spectroscopy and spectro-photometry for virtually all of his career. He has applied the methodology to the solution of a wide variety of analytical problems ranging from simple quantitative analysis to the determination of the stabilities of complexes of drugs with biological macromolecules. Additionally, he is active in the theoretical aspects of spectroscopy and is currently working on an approach to calculate the molar absorptivities of complexes in which multiple ligand binding occurs.
METAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. Expert has several years of experience in the analysis of metal ions by chelation with organic ligands. Most often the analysis is carried out absorptiometrically or fluorimetrically.
pH & WATER CHEMISTRY. Expert's research in fluorimetry has carried him deeply into the chemistry of aqueous solutions. In particular, he has been able to demonstrate that the concept of pH is applicable to mixed aqueous organic solvents over a substantial range of composition. Some of this research has also shed new light on the tendency of water to form extended clusters upon the addition of organic solvents. Expert's work on proton-transfer in concentrated acid and neutral electrolyte solutions has yielded new ways to deal with kinetic and equilibrium chemical situations in these media which may be more representative of seawater than diluted aqueous solutions.
