Expert studies photo-oxidation and photostabilization of wood. He has developed new ultraviolet stabilizers for wood and wood coating systems, particularly for clear coatings and varnishes. He is experienced with chemical modification of wood to achieve dimensional stability, resistance to insects (termites), and improved water-repellency and weatherability.
He has become involved with developing new technologies for producing “plastic lumber” or composites from commingled plastics. No sorting or separation is required for these new recycling processes. He is currently working on recycling of plastics from industry as well as from municipal solid wastes. He can answer a variety of questions on materials reuse issues.
He is working on technologies to enhance recycled newspaper products. He has made composites from newspaper, paper products, and plastic wastes, primarily for the construction, horticulture, and agriculture industries. Expert is developing new bleaching technology for high-yield, lignin-containing pulp fibers. These bleaching agents are non-sulfur and non-chlorine based. The stabilization of color and brightness of paper is actively pursued.
Expert has developed unique encapsulation techniques using plastics/wood fiber to control the release of fertilizers for forest and agriculture applications. The composition can be molded into various articles or ground into a granular powder.
Expert has conducted and given seminars on various aspects of adhesion and adhesives for wood products. His research topics include the development of interfacial adhesion based on wood surface structures, chemical compositions, and new adhesives. He also studies the environmental effects on adhesive performance. He has 20 years experience in manufacturing various adhesives for wood products and recently successfully developed a phenolic wood adhesive from liquefied wood.
Expert has conducted research in all areas of chemical modification of cellulose, including etherification, esterification, cross-linking reaction, and grafting reaction. Novel cellulose derivatives have been produced in the past three years.
He has conducted research to improve stability of cellulose nitrate under heat and ultraviolet and weathering conditions. He has used electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to study free radical formation in wood, cellulose, lignin, plastics initiated by ultraviolet light, mechanical stress, and heat.
